  1. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN RUN II PROJECT MANAGEMENT GROUP Victor Kuchler Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 1 of 13 V. Kuchler

  2. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN • SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION • Shells First Observed at the Fermilab Site in November, 2004 • Actual Veligers (Larva) Have Probably Been Here for 4-5 Years • Originally Infested the Great Lakes Region from the St Lawrence Seaway • Also Confirmed in the Fox River System • Can be Transferred by Birds, Boats and Fishermen and Tackle Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 2 of 13 V. Kuchler

  3. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN 4 Yrs - 1.25” Storm Water Discharge Culvert at Casey’s Pond Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 3 of 13 V. Kuchler

  4. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN • ICW SYSTEM/TREATMENT FACTS • Approximately 12 Miles of Distribution Piping • 5% is > 14” Diameter • 31% is 14” Diameter • 41% is 8” or 10” Diameter • 23% is 6” Diameter • 170 Valves and Hydrants • Flushing Always Begins at Casey’s Pond and Extends Outward Through the Distribution System • Normal Flushing Uses 20 Sectors • Treatment Flushing Uses ~60 Sectors Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 4 of 13 V. Kuchler

  5. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN • MARCH ’06 NON-TREATMENT ICW • SYSTEM FLUSH • Duration Was 11 Days (3 Crews/Day) • Approximately 500 lbs of Shells Were Removed • 20 Sectors (Hydrants) Exercised • Shell Size Indicated Maximum 2 Year Growth • Relatively Uneventful with No Pipe Ruptures or Valve Malfunctions • Flushing Was Completed Without Interruption to On-Going Operations or Equipment Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 5 of 13 V. Kuchler

  6. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 6 of 13 V. Kuchler

  7. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN • MUSSEL REMOVAL AT CASEY’S POND • Removal Process Began Mar 9 (14 Days) • Diver Used a Combination High-Pressure Hose and Vacuum System • Casey’s Pond Intake Structure, Intake Piping and Pump House Well Were Cleaned • 10,000 lbs of Shells Were Removed • 80% of the Shells Were Empty (ie Dead) • Shells Reflected a Broader Size Range But the Largest is Still the 2 Year Size Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 7 of 13 V. Kuchler

  8. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 8 of 13 V. Kuchler

  9. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN • ICW SYSTEM/TREATMENT FACTS • Chemical to be Used is Nalco EVAC an Oxidizing Molluscicide • EVAC has a 19 Hour Half-Life but is Not Dispersive and Decomposes Microbially • Not Harmful to Fish or Other Wildlife • Not Harmful to Piping or Equipment • Other Treatment Options Were Investigated But Eliminated Primarily Due to Application Requirements and System Size • Biggest Constraint to Effective Treatment is Water Temperature - Opt. 65oF to 75oF Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 9 of 13 V. Kuchler

  10. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 10 of 13 V. Kuchler

  11. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN • PROPOSED TREATMENT FLUSHING PLAN • Current Start Date Planned as May 8 • May 9 - Complete Treatment Chemical • May 10-11 - Treatment Process (26 hrs) • May 12-23 - Best Case Duration (11) • May 12-Jun 1 - Worst Case Duration (21) • May 12-26 - Most Likely Duration (15) • Pre-Exercising of Valves is not a Good Idea • Pipe and Other Repair Materials Have Been Stockpiled for Quick Response • Contracts are in Place to Support FESS Operations Personnel in Repair Efforts Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 11 of 13 V. Kuchler

  12. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 12 of 13 V. Kuchler

  13. FESS ZEBRA MUSSEL TREATMENT PLAN • Summary • Flushing Experience to Date is Encouraging • We are Well Prepared for the Process • Water Temperature is Not Likely to be Optimal, However Any Shells Removed Will Be Helpful to the ICW System • There is Evidence that the “Carrying Capacity of the System” (equilibrium) May be 2 Years • Experience is Gained with Each Flushing Cycle • Future Flushing Cycles Will Include Treatment and Become Routine System Maintenance Run II PMG Meeting - 4.20.06 13 of 13 V. Kuchler
