  1. TheBare Bones of an PERSUASIVE Essay T. Rex was the biggest meat-eating dinosaur. Actually, there were at least two other meat-eating dinosaurs that were bigger than T. Rex, Giganotosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus Mary Navarre Language Arts Supervisor Linda Widnall Academic Writing Coach

  2. How many sentences should you have in your introduction? For now… 1 Once you are comfortable writing a thesis statement, you will learn how to HOOK your reader.

  3. The Thesis Statement! The thesis statement answers the prompt and introduces the reader to your two claims. Why do you need it? It is a road map for your essay; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the essay.

  4. What does a thesis statement look like? • Prompt: The Hillsborough County School Board is considering offering fast food options like McDonalds and Taco Bell. Before you begin writing, think about whether or not schools should offer fast food options. Write to convince the school board to agree with your viewpoint. Thesis Statement Example: This district should absolutely offer fast food options at schools because students will not waste as much food, and they will enjoy coming to school more. Claim #1 Claim #2

  5. Your 1st and 2nd Body Paragraphs What should these paragraphs include? Each body paragraph should include: • a topic sentence stating your claim, • negation to counter others’ claims, • an example to support your opinion, • and commentary. *Counter-Argument- recognizing others’ opinions in your argument and proving why their opinions are wrong. *commentary- explaining to your reader why what you feel is important to you, the world, your community, your peers, etc.

  6. How do you write a topic sentence? Prompt: The Hillsborough County School Board is considering offering fast food options like McDonalds and Taco Bell. Before you begin writing, think about whether or not schools should offer fast food options. Write to convince the school board to agree with your viewpoint. Topic Sentence Example: I know if burgers and fries are on the menu, students will not waste as much food.

  7. Body Paragraph Example I know if burgers and fries are on the menu, students will not waste as much food. You may be thinking that introducing fast food into schools will increase the obesity epidemic sweeping our nation, but that is just not the case. Whether schools provide healthy food or not, my fellow peers are not eating the fruits and vegetables on their plates; they are eating the high calorie foods offered like fries, pizza, et cetera, and then throwing the rest away. I am not kidding. Today at lunch for example, as my peers and I exited the cafeteria, I watched them throw away enough healthy food to feed the next two lunch periods. It was awful. We are just too young to realize how our actions may affect others, too self centered to think about the people starving in other countries, and too powerless to make the changes that will bring this needless wastefulness to an end. It is a crying shame, and something must be done about it. My suggestion to you, my fearless leader, is to bring healthy fast food options into our school cafeteria. I know the cafeteria staff works really hard to make broccoli taste good, but they aren’t getting the job done. However, fast food companies know how to make low calorie food taste better, which in part will encourage my peers to stop wasting so much food. Topic sentence Counter-ArgumentExample Commentary
