John Dillinger’s Fingerprint Card Despite Dillinger’s attempts to alter his fingerprints by dipping them in acid his prints were still successfully identified because each print still had individual ridge characteristics that matched his original prints. With time all the skin damaged on Dillinger’s fingertips would have grown back to restore his original fingerprints. These are the fingerprints after his death:

  4. Finger ridge patterns are determined by the dermal papillae layer underneath the epidermis.
