Join us on an engaging excursion to Vic Uni for a day of interactive activities and data collection in the fields of sports science and mathematics. Students will participate in weightlifting, homeostasis testing, biomechanics analysis, and more. The program includes discussions on qualitative vs. quantitative data, graph plotting techniques, and trends analysis. Students will benefit from insights into the relevance of information on performance, supported by knowledgeable coaches and trainers. Opportunities for video and photo documentation, sports analysis software, and potential follow-up math excursions enhance the learning experience.

SARIP at Vic UniSport and Recreation Industry Pathways A short presentation Tony Nguyen
What we did • Excursion to Vic Uni for kids to engage in activities and collect data • 3 activities with recess and lunch breaks (no food provided) and a short ethics seminar • Activity 1: weight lifting, reach test, beep test. • Activity 2: homeostasis. Body temp and heart rate. • Activity 3: biomechanics. Throwing a ball and kicking a footy with 3D cameras.
What we gathered • Data for univariate and bivariate data yr 10 or 11. • Qualitative vs. quantitative. • Graphs plots: frequency, bar, dot, box etc. • Talking points for increasing/decreasing trends. • Line of best fit and linear extension possible
What happened • Students were happy with the activities and saw the relationship between information and performance. Relevant to their interests. • The coaches/trainers were well spoken and prepared their own information sheets for a one hour 30 minute session • Video and photo opportunities. • Kinovea program for sports analysis potential. Maybe for specialist kinematics/physics. • Is it possible to have a maths excursion?
What next? • The data collected from the day can be used for assessment (discussion, SACs, worksheets) and future reference for KLA • Possible annual event? • PD days working with Vic Uni and other schools to explore other areas for VCE mathematics and life skills.
