  4. TOM SUE ED HELPING OUR VETERANS WHEN YOU HAVE SEVERAL REQUEST FOR HELP - - - HOW DO YOU DETERMINE WHICH VETERANS TO HELP? AND WHAT TYPE OF HELP YOU WILL PROVIDE? WHAT ARE SOME OTHER AVENUES OPEN TO YOU FOR HELPING THESE VETERANS ? ? ?

  5. HELPING VETERANS • When and Where the DAV is involved, Veterans Welfare COVERS many areas of help and assistance Some that quickly come to mind are: Financial Aid Medical Issues, Supplies, Equip Structural Assistance Emotional Support

  6. HELPING VETERANS FINANCIAL Aid and Assistance PAYING Bills - Utility Bills Groceries Medical Expenses Vehicle Repairs Transportation Costs

  7. HELPING OUR VETERANS UTILITY BILLS DID YOU KNOW THAT SOME UTILITY BILLS CONTAIN “OTHER” CHARGES - - SUCH AS APPLIANCES AND/OR OUTDOOR LIGHTING?? ASK THE UTILITY COMPANY - IF DAV PAYS THE UTILITY PORTION, CAN THEY ALLOW THE VETERAN 30 DAY TO PAY OTHER CHARGES??

  8. HELPING OUR VETERANS AVENUES OF HELP and ASSISTANCE Internal External DAV DEPARTMENTS Other Veteran Groups Reach Out to Community DAV CHAPTERS Coordinate with Other Agencies CHAPTER COMMITTEES MSO/CSO

  9. 1 2 3 HELPING OUR VETERANS INTERNAL (DAV) DAV DEPARTMENT – WHEN FINANCES ALLOW, OUR DEPARTMENT CAN & WILL HELP - DON’T FORGET, THERE IS A VAST RESOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE IN THE DEPTH OF OUR DEPARTMENT. “ASK” FOR THEIR IDEAS !! DAV CHAPTERS – ESTABLISH A “RELIEF” OR “BENEVOLENCE” COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE NEED AND DETERMINE VALIDITY OF REQUEST BEST PRACTICES - HAVE COMMITTEE RECOMMEND – LET THE CHAPTER MEMBERS VOTE

  10. HELPING OUR VETERANS DAV CHAPTERS – BEST PRACTICES (CONTINUED) DO NOT GIVE MONEY. PAY BILLS DIRECTLY TO LEGITIMATE COMPANIES EXPLAIN FINANCIAL HELP IS “ONE TIME” ONLY FOR HABITUAL (OR CIRCUIT) USERS – SUGGEST FINANCIAL COUNSELING ESTABLISH PROCEDURES TO HANDLE EMERGENCY CASES (Time Sensitive Needs Between Meetings) CSO Certification and Training Helping Veterans file claims for benefits/compensation ULTIMATELY leads to improved WELFARE for Veterans and their families. Utilize MSO when in your area.

HELPING OUR VETERANS EXTERNAL SOURCES CONTACT OTHER VETERAN GROUPS COORDINATE WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES (Police, Sheriff, City/County Offices, Employment Offices, Human Services, Welfare Dept, Food Stamps, etc) CONTACT OTHER CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS (Churches, Missions and etc) COORDINATE WITH OTHER CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS (Red Cross, Lions Club, BPW etc)

HELPING OUR VETERANS Benefits of Staying Connected with the Community: Many Local Groups and Organizations ARE Willing to Help Veterans Through Your ‘Exposure’ in the Community, Local Veterans “LEARN” About the DAV and Its Mission!! “Because Of” Your Help for Local Community Veterans, NEW DAV Members are Recruited!! Habitual or Circuit “Users” are more quickly exposed

  13. Remember OurMission DAV • Our “Mission” is CARRIED FORWARD by Extending DAV’s Mission of HELP & HOPE into the Community - - BUT it STARTS with US - the Leaders and Members at CHAPTER LEVEL DAV’s “REPUTATION” Rests in Our Hands !! So let’s do it right!!
