  1. TRG Learning Day A VIRTUAL SPACE ODYSSEY January 8, 2010 Brought to you by The Learning Committee

  2. UNIVERSAL EXPLORATION: AN OVERVIEW

  3. In the beginning….. • TRG (and other) trainers and consultants did face-to-face facilitation, training and OD work and it was good. • Over time, new technologies beyond flip charts and markers appeared, …. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suWzpLmRH0g

  4. And then we started using… • Websites for clients • Online surveys including 360s • MBTI online • Video and teleconferencing • Phone coaching • And a few TRGers began to participate in distance learning programs (Capacity, CGIAR, etc.)

  5. Today, TRG is beginning to work in the virtual world of…. • Synchronous and asynchronous distance learning • SmartBoards • Polling systems • Wikis • Facebook & LinkedIn • Blended learning • OD using Sharepoint and other web-based platforms • Others?

  6. And yet, we know there is a LOT more to learn…. • In 2009, TRG established the “Technology to Support our Core Services” (TSCS) Committee • The TSCS conducted an internal survey on TRG’s experience with E-Learning. • TRGers indicated their interest in learning more about using technology to support client services and using E-learning in a TLC survey in August 2009 • At the Board Meeting in December 2009, TRGers gave input into what they would like to learn related to technology and e-learning • Today’s Virtual Space Odyssey Learning Day was born • Work with the Board to further define how we can strengthen our capacity is ongoing.

  7. Objectives By the end of the day, we will have: • Gained a shared understanding of emerging trends in virtual collaboration and learning; • Experienced some key e-learning tools and understood ways they have been applied with TRG clients and beyond; • Explored the steps involved in creating successful virtual experiences, and understood the potential pitfalls in domestic and development contexts; • Discussed ways in which TRG can support the exploration and application of virtual tools, resources and trends.

  8. Agenda 10:00-10:30 Universal Exploration: Overview 10:30-12:30 Our Solar System: Meeting Our Clients’ Needs (Tech & Tools) 12:30-01:15 LUNCH 01:15-02:30 Our Solar System: continued 02:30-03:15 The Big Bang Panel: Steps & Challenges of Creation 03:15-03:30 BREAK 03:30-04:15 Planetary Alignment: Strategy & Skill Enhancement 04:15-04:30 The Eclipse: Closing

  9. Some Virtual Context

  10. Types of virtual environments/platforms • Teleconferences • Videoconferences • Web-based synchronous platforms (distance learning programs, Elluminate, Adobe Connect, chat rooms, simulation games (e.g., Second Life), etc. • Web-based asynchronous platforms (Sharepoint, list-serves, bulletin boards, etc.)

  11. Virtual learners want learning to be… • Personalized • Easy access • Able to do random searches for “just-in-time” learning • Immediately applicable • Mobile (any time, any where) • Fast • Social • Interactive • Responsive to multigenerational needs

  12. Top 20 Countries with Highest Internet Usese http://www.internetworldstats.com/top20.htm

  13. The Hot Trend: Mobile Learning • Connecting people • Anytime, anywhere • The right information, on the right device, the right context, the right guidance • Mostly informal (e.g., mobile performance support, games, community, conferencing and collaboration)

  14. Emergence of the Smartphone

  15. What the Mobile Web Looks Like • More wireless devices, more wireless broadband services. Apps make the device. Open access to run any application on any device anywhere in the world. • The next-gen computer and ultimate social media device: the 3G Smartphone • Sensors and Location Based Services • Web Video, Games, Collaboration • Content or Commerce? The Transactional Side of Mobile • Beyond 3G: LTE (Long-Term Evolution) and 4G Services • The Mobile Web is all about Apps

  16. Table Task Discuss: • What seems most challenging about taking what we do at TRG and translating it into a virtual environment? • You have 10 minutes to discuss and come up with your group’s top two biggest challenges. Be prepared to share them.

  17. Brief Intro to What You Need to Develop E-learning Programs • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxwfiFQYsRo

  18. OUR SOLAR SYSTEM: MEETING OUR CLIENTS’ NEEDS

  19. Meet Moodle with Meredith • The CK2C Project Experience

  20. Be Elluminated with Bob • Bob Grabman will share his experience with Elluminate at Save the Children. • Enter the world of Elluminate: • https://sas.elluminate.com/site/external/launch/meeting.jnlp?password=M.4B444342F3FCB02639A432FB0CBB1A

  21. LUNCH!

  22. OUR SOLAR SYSTEM: MEETING OUR CLIENTS’ NEEDS Continued……

  23. Adobe Connect with Darlene • Darlene Brady Christopher of IFC will share her experience with e-learning/distance learning using Adobe Connect. • Enter the world of Adobe Connect: http://worldbankva.na4.acrobat.com/learningday/

  24. THE BIG BANG PANEL: STEPS & CHALLENGES OF CREATION

  25. Panel Discussion Questions • What are some of the past or current challenges you have found using this or other e-learning tools? • How does the preparation and development compare to face-to-face preparation and development? • If you had to do the development of the training/project/tool over again, what would you do differently?

  26. Panel Discussion Questions - continued • What are the different kinds of skills, competencies and roles needed to make these virtual sessions happen? • How do the development costs (hidden and unhidden) compare with the benefits/cost savings? • What would potential challenges be in using these tools in a multi-cultural setting?

  27. PLANETARY ALIGNMENT: STRATEGY & SKILL ENHANCEMENT

  28. Strengthening TRGs’ Capacity in Using Technology to Support Our Clients Individually, reflect and write answers on an index card: • Based on what I know now, what technology supported services would I like to see TRG being able to offer to our clients? • What do I want to be able to know and do to use technology effectively with our clients?

  29. Group Task In your table groups share your individual responses and then discuss and be prepared to share your response to: • What recommendations do we have for TRG to support us and the rest of the organization in strengthening our capacity to use technology to support our clients?
