  3. C-A Teachers' Resource Center--J. Robinson, director Breaking down the Elements • Common Core Standards (CCSS, CCLS) • The New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards (NYS P-12 CCLS) serve as a consistent set of expectations for what students should learn and be able to do, so that we can ensure that every student across New York is on track for college and career readiness. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) will continue to develop educator resources to support the successful implementation of the CCLS in classrooms across New York State over the next several years. • The NYS P-12 CCLS are internationally-benchmarked and evidence-based standards. These standards will serve as guideposts for educators to ensure that every student is on track for college and career readiness. • Instructional Data Systems • Assessments show us what our students know and are able to do, and where the gaps are in their learning as they progress towards proficiency. But how do we make sure that we’re using the data from those assessments to maximize student learning? • Effective Teachers & Principals • Nothing is more important to student success than the effectiveness of teachers and principals. All of us involved in education are proud of the work we do – and we all know that we can do better if we have the right tools.

Driven by Data, author Paul Santoyo (book and CD) Building Blocks of Effective Assessment • Assessments must be the starting point—before any teaching ever begins • Assessments must be transparent—schools take control of their curriculum and guide learning based on their vision (more in chapter 5) • Assessments must be common—essential to use the same exam in all classes in a given grade-level and content area (opportunity for faculty to share ideas and collaborate to create the best possible curriculum for all students) • Assessments must be interim—happen at LEAST quarterly, and ideally every 6-8 weeks at middle and high school levels; if less, weaknesses go unrecognized until it is too late to correct them
