  5. Body Paragraphs • A. Topic Sentence • A later achievement that Ms. Winfrey accomplished was creating and establishing the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg, South Africa. • South Africa is a boarding school for grades 7–12. • Out of 3500 applications, only 152 girls were selected as students. • Opened in Jan. 2007 • Jan. 2012 – 1st graduating class of 72 girls all going on to college • It is the school of Oprah's dreams, but to make it a reality, she had to find the perfect students. • "This is a school for leaders," Oprah says. "This is a school for powerful girls who will use their power in service to their nation and to our world.“ (Chance of a Lifetime)

  6. B. Controversy / Opposition • There were a number of controversies that surrounded the opening of this leadership academy. • Selecting Africa instead of the US to build a school. • School is too lavish for such an impoverished country • The racial makeup of students • “Say what you will about the American educational system — it does work. ... If you are a child in the United States, you can get an education. ... I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn't there. ... If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod, sneakers, or some money. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.” (Oprah.com)

  7. C. Rebuttal • However, Oprah did not allow the controversies to overshadow the excitement and pride associated with this great achievement. • This academy has given young girls, who may never have received an education, the opportunity to accomplish their goals of going to college and establishing great careers. • “Oprah will get a lot of bang for her buck by educating poor Black girls in Africa. She realizes that educating South African girls must be a priority to help turn the tide in sub-Saharan Africa…where an education is quite rare, and birth rates for uneducated girls are so high, a little education could make a dramatic difference.” (Karen Russell of The Huffington Post)
