Admission & Placement • Admission Requirements for Baccalaureate Institutions • CADRs – Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a senior year quantitative course. • OR pass pre-calculus or higher • Placement • Depends • EWU, WSU – everybody • UW – students taking certain Math courses (pre-calculus, calculus, algebra with applications, analysis for biologists)

  3. Admission and placement • Admission Requirements for SFCC (Community College) • Over 18 or GED • No Math admission requirement, but some demonstration of proficiency required for transfer degree. • Placement test or remedial coursework • Placement • All degree seeking students

  4. Is there a common standard for placement tests? • No • Well, sort of…if you count the MPT-G • Really, though…No • Very hopeful about Smarter Balanced.

Graduation Requirements • Almost every bachelor’s degree requires some college level Math/Quantitative course. • College level – above Algebra II/ Intermediate Algebra • Occasionally, other quantitative courses may be taken • Two year vocational Associate Degrees can have math as determined by the needs of the profession.

  7. College Spark grant • Participants – Spokane Falls Community College and high schools from Spokane Public Schools • Ferris, Lewis and Clark, North Central, Shadle, Rogers and Bryant • Basic Concept – Give SFCC’s placement test to SPS Algebra II students in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

  8. College Spark grant • The SFCC test is built with MyMathTest (MMT) from Pearson. • Homegrown – written by SFCC Math faculty to align with curriculum. • SFCC students succeeded (2.0 or better) in their course placement 61% of the time in 2012-13.

  9. College Spark grant • The MMT can place students at 6 levels • Math 90 – PreAlgebra • Math 93 – Algebra I • Math 94 – Algebra II • Math 98 – Algebra III • Math 108 – College Level • Math 141 – Precalculus I

College Spark grant • In practice, the test is competency-based. • For example, students must show competency in prealgebra before attempting algebra questions. • This feature was turned off for this activity. • Students took the test in winter and in spring. • Students were given access to a tutorial in the interim.

  11. College Spark grant • The purpose of the activity was to get a snapshot of the current state of alignment between SPS ands SFCC and provide information. • Placement results in winter and spring • Rough line item analysis reflecting emphasis at each institution.

College Spark grant Placement results • Note that in order to place in College Level (Math 108), students would need to pass 4 sections – PreAlgebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, and Algebra III. • Each section has roughly 10 questions. • 1352 students took the MMT in winter and 1406 took it again in the spring.

  13. College Spark grant • The MMT was also given to a small test group of 24 SFCC students completing Algebra III - Math 98, the course serving as a prerequisite for college level math courses. • Only 47% of students that were successful in Math 98 placed in a course higher than Math 98.

  16. Spokane’s core to college grant • Grant Participants – SFCC, SCC, EWU, SPS, Mead, ESD 101 • CV, Chewelah, Colville, Davenport, Creston and Newport are participating in the grant activities. • Basic Concept – Advocating for greater alignment through the implementation of CCSS.

  17. Spokane’s core to college grant • First year activity • Design a gap analysis instrument for taking a snapshot of the level at which participating schools are addressing the CCSS standards in Algebra and Functions.

  23. Spokane’s core to college grant • Observations • Not surprisingly, secondary schools report greater alignment with CCS standards • Somewhat surprisingly, the self reports indicate significant variation within ratings for each sector.

  24. Spokane’s core to college grant • Next Steps • Site visits to each of the participating schools • Ask for reflections and ideas on alignment • Advocate and inform about regional efforts • Organize ongoing regional efforts supporting greater alignment
