Abstract • The…. will be holding a business advice seminar, Protecting Your Ideas and Inventions. • To reap maximum rewards from their creations it’s essential that businesses back up their innovations with the necessary IP protection. This IP advice seminar provides a one-stop shop for local people and businesses in …. by providing practical advice and business support.

Benefits • The Seminar will offer advice on protecting as well as exploiting inventions and will be relevant to inventors, sole traders or small businesses. • The seminar brings together a team of IP experts and professionals from a number of organizations to provide free expert help and advice. The contents of the seminar have been developed together with the Turkish patent Institute and with the assistance of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Contents • The Seminar will focus on providing the participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to assist the client/inventor in obtaining a patent, from the initial step of meeting with an inventor through the post patent issuance procedures. It will be assumed that the participants have taken the basic on-line WIPO training on patents and on patents drafting (DL-301E and DL-320E). • It will cover the following topics:

Contents (cont.) • Pre-filing stage: • Distinguishing your project’s innovations from known prior art • Ideas vs. business opportunities • Gathering financial resources • Creating innovation network • Incorporating IP into a business plan • strategic choices related to the commercialization of IP • collaborating with VCs and entrepreneurs • Learning by doing- write a business plan related to innovative technologies and present it in a final Road Show

Contents (cont.) • Filing process: • Client Interview, Search and Patentability Opinion • Choosing your patent agent and • Parts of a Patent Application • In class claim drafting workshop • Office Actions • External markets considerations, patent protection in the USA, in the EPO and international patent applications;

Contents (cont.) • Post- filing actions: • Infringements and threats / apprehension of suits • Know your opponents: • Who to sue- customer/small infringer-large infringer? • litigation- active vs. passive litigation • Know yourself: • Patent strengths and weaknesses • Patent portfolio strategy/management • Strategic patenting- core business- area vital to competitors • Quality vs. quantity • Licensing • Cross license • Royalty bearing license • Design around patented products • Patent litigation cost and budgeting • Patent enforcement home and abroad
