What is Identity Theft? “Identity theft and identity fraud are terms used to refer to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person's personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain. ” http://www.justice.gov/criminal/fraud/websites/idtheft.html

Identity theft Issues Identity theft is occurring at a rapid pace in this country. “Identity Theft is a serious crime affecting as many as 10 million Americans a year (as estimated by the Federal Trade Commission) and accounting for the loss of $221 billion a year worldwide (as estimated by the Aberdeen Group).” Americans are being tricked out of money they worked hard for.

Penalties Identity Theft became a federal crime in 1998 Identity Theft Act- makes identity theft a federal crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and up to $250,00 in fines FBI, Secret Service, and other agencies to combat the crime In July 2004, the Identity Theft enhancement act was signed Expanded the criteria of identity theft, made penalties harsher for committing identity theft The enhancement act hands down a two-year prison sentence for aggravated identity theft, and an additional five years for felony violations related to terrorism.

Stop Identity Theft Government The Government needs to step in a protect its citizens The 11.4 million Americans who were victim need to be helped $55 billion in stolen money from hard working Americans Money is taken right out of the economy The government has the power and assets to go after identity thieves A lot of Crimes happen abroad or over the internet and the government agencies that have jurisdiction over the cases now have the right to operate abroad
  8. Prevention Always Read Bank and Credit Card statements Check your credit report frequently throughout the year Follow up about calls or accounts you didn’t open Shred documents with name and important information of them
