What was the Great Depression? • The Great Depression was a dramatic economic downturn. • It took place from 1929 to about 1939 affecting most every one in the western industrialized world. • This period of time troubled people economically, physically, and emotionally. • The most obvious reason for why the Great Depression took place is because of the severe crash in the stock market.
Cause of the Great Depression • During the 1920’s many people were wealthy and thought that the economy was improving. • The stock market was climbing. • Banks were overinvested in the stock market and started to fail. • People panicked and started to pull money out of the stock market. • With no one left to buy the stock, more companies started to fail. • People went bankrupt losing their life savings.
Affects of the Great Depression • Not everyone was affected. Most rich people didn’t experience any changes to their life during this time and didn’t really notice the suffering of others. • The baseball star, Babe Ruth, for example became even more rich than he was before the depression.
Affects of the Great Depression • Middle class citizenscould not provide for their family anymore. • Divorce and birth rates dropped sharply due to expensive legal and medical fees. • Surprisingly some families came closer together because they learned to get by with what they had. • Other families fell apart and were separated due to the stress of the depression. • A 1940 survey revealed that 1.5 million married women had been abandoned by their husbands.
Jobs during the Great Depression • People were frantically searching for jobs. Some people found jobs farming and ranching in exchange for food. • Most young men worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC), a public work relief program for unmarried and unemployed men providing them with a place to live, clothing, food, and $30 a month. • Men in this program planted nearly 3 billion trees to help reforest America and constructed more than 800 parks nationwide.
School during the Great Depression • Most children dropped out of school due to limited transportation and instead worked to help their family. • Those that attended school found it very difficult because they weren’t able to afford school books. • Most schools did not have a lunch program. • All grades were usually in one classroom, some had team sports and P.E.
Migrant workers during the Great Depression • Migrant workers had always lived in horrible conditions and were always moving to new places and searching for any job to survive. • They worked for very low wages in mostly farms, planting and cropping vegetables. • The farmers they worked for housed them in chicken coops, barns, or open fields. They received very little food. • Once The Great Depression hit, many migrant workers died. • Their wages dropped from 35 cents per hour to 14 cents per hour.
Migrant workers today • Migrant workers still exist today. Some are Mexican men who leave their homes in hope to earn enough money to provide for their families. • They pick crops for different farms and are moved to different places whenever they are needed. • They exist all over the world, but mostly inside of the U.S.
