  1. Site testing of Mauna Kea Mark Chun (Gemini) & Richard Wainscoat (IfA) 2001 October 22

  2. Overall plan • Seeing monitors as basic measure • Goal: run nightly for 2-3 years • Monitor a few select sites • Add turbulence profilers in ~week long campaigns over course of study • Simulations of wind flow, turbulence at targets sites

  3. Seeing Monitors • Two CTIO DIMM on loan • Issues • baseline, aperture size • min. exposure time of camera • mount stability in strong winds • Deployment & Support • Until approval from OMKM, must set up telescopes nightly • How to support long-term use until there is a facility seeing monitor

  4. DIMM Lab Integration • Hardware Mods • Camera -> 1msec • Integration and Tests at HP/Hilo • Setup procedures • Software improvements

  5. Work still to do on DIMMs • Automation • tested all aspects of manual operation • current effort is to make more robust (CTIO efforts) • Trailer deployment • maintain alignment, single person setup, wind screen • Leave setup for limited times? • Office of Mauna Kea Management • Calibration/Comparison • Comparison to focal-plane images, Subaru DIMMs • We want a GSM and Generalized-SCIDAR on MK

  6. “Regular” field use started • Team = 1 motivated UH-Hilo undergrad 1night/wk

  7. Selected test sites about summit • East/West ridge, future telescope sites

  8. Field test results

  9. Effect of Integration Time Data has been smoothed

  10. Realistic near-term goals • Compare local seeing effects at different places on summit/valley • Total of ~3-4 weeks time over a year • Systematic pattern of seeing on the summit? • A preferred location for a facility monitor? • Use of DIMMs for enclosure tests • Recruiting support for operations • Calibration/Cross checks • Collaboration w/Subaru -> 2 more DIMMs for study???

  11. Longer-term sites goals on MK • Seeing monitors • Hiring full-time support for seeing monitors • Goal is ~50% coverage of useable nights at four sites (Subaru collaboration for two more DIMMs?) • Towered location • CFHT tower, use original NOAO site survey towers?? • Turbulence profiler runs on MK spread throughout the year • Start next spring/summer, campaign mode • One run to coincide with a single-star profiler? • Wind and turbulence simulations for identified telescope locations on MK
