  5. Who we are • DST Initiative • Response to SAEOS (Strategy) • Established in April 2011 • Resourced in December 2012 • Hosted by CSIR, SIIU unit

  6. Our vision To create a vibrant , collaborative and well co-ordinated Earth Observations and space Applications community with ready and open access to ready to EO data and imagery for South Africa

  7. Our Mission • To be an effective co-ordination initiative for earth observations and space community. • To create and support vibrant, well-coordinated and efficient user – provider forums for the Earth Observation, Space based Navigation, Space-based communications and Space exploration communities. • To encourage free and open access to Earth Observation data and actively promote international participation in relevant activities by the South African Earth Observation and Space Applications communities.

  8. What we do • Secretariat to SA-GEO • Coordinate Communities of Practices through workshops/symposia /meetings. • Promote data access and sharing through the Portal • Establish communication with and networking within SA EO communities • Determine user requirements • Promote South Africa’s participation in international EO initiatives • Future • Secretariat to SA Nav , Comms and Explorarion

  9. Proposed SA-GEO CoP’s • Air Quality • Agriculture (12/13) • Land cover • Water (Et) (11/12) • EO Infrastructure (Data) (11/12) • Built Environment • Energy (13/14) • Ecology & Biodiversity (12/13) • Natural Resources • Disasters (13/14) • Health (14/15) • Climate & Weather (13/14) • Coastal & Marine (13/14) • Mining & Geology (14/15) • Legal (13/14)

  10. N-R CoP • Recommendation: • The meeting recommended the establishment of a NR CoP but with the incorporation of the a wider audience consisting of representation from public and private sector • The meeting recommended that DAFF, WC and KZN PDA’s co-chair the NR CoP as an interim phase. • NEOSS is to give full support during the initial phase of establishment • (Minutes: 10-11 Oct 2012 Upington) • Co-Chairs: WC PDA (Mike.Wallace), KZN PDA (C. Adjorlola) CSIR NRE (Abel Ramoelo), DAFF (A Collette) • Co-chairs Meeting last week Jun • Charter drafted • Three meetings in parallel with “NRIA TT” (TASK TEAM ON NATURAL RESOURCES INVENTORIES AND ASSESSMENTS). • Deliverables: • Bushbuck ridge study • Monitoring (LADA & Fixed Point) • User requirements & Societal Benefits • GMES & Africa NR chapter (2 workshops) • CoP co chair to attend Egypt workshop.

  11. AgricCoP CELC took note of these developments and endorsed the use of new technology, and also of the following: •That South Africa benefits from international expertise, •that the ARC is already involved in a SADC project using remote sensing to monitor fires, and •that the DST, ARC and DAFF will meet to discuss involvement in projects and how CEC can benefit from it. (CELC Minutes of 29 Nov 2012) • Co Chair: ARC (T.Newby), SANSA (N. Knox) ARC (W Durand), GTI (F. Ferreira) • CoP Reports on EO to CELC – Sub Comm: EO Applications • Involved in GEO Ag CoP • JECAM site (FS) registered – Imagery • GWK – possible extension to JECAM (share data) • GEOGLAM (Cont to IP) • Link to MESA – SADC GEOGLAM • Co chairs met 9 May, next CoP event Jul/Aug.

  12. Air Quality CoP Recommendations: 1.It was considered necessary to further investigate the potential use and sources of Earth Observations data, especially satellite based observations for use in air quality monitoring. To achieve this a specified project or consultant ToR would be desirable. 2.There is a need to further investigate the potential benefits and costs of harmonising the SAAQIS with the SAEOS portal. 3.Further discussions with SANSA are required to understand the potential and limitations of obtaining the required and prioritised satellite observations for air quality management through the EODC. 4.As air quality is a prominent Task with in the GEO work plan, consideration should be given to integrate the South African activities in this field into the GEO task to the mutual benefit of GEOSS and South Africa, 5.Following the expressed support for a SA-GEO Air Quality Community of Practice, NEOSS should pursue this and facilitate the establishment of such a CoP. (Workshop report) Co Chairs: DEA (P. Gwaze) SAWS - tbc Workshop 20 Jun 2012. 75 attendees from Nat, Prov, Local, Acadm, Res. Needs a follow up Workshop. Interest from Netherlands (TNO)to collaborate

  13. LandCoverCoP • Co Chairs: NGI (A. Parker), GTI (S. Martin), • 2 workshops (SA-GEO Symp, GISSA) • NGI Programme on L/C drives CoP • Deliverables: • Research Agenda • Best Practice Guidelines • Capacity Development • Need to connect to GEO tasks

  14. Water CoP • Co Chairs: WRC, DWA, CSIR (all tbc) • Discussed with WRC • Requested NEOSS to Report on EO Applications • (UKZN, CSIR, GEOSS, NEOSS) • CoP workshop part of process • Et strong focus (Sub CoP) • TIGER • AfriWCCI • GMES Africa “Water Chapter” Wshop • NEOSS discussions with DWA • CoP meet on data availability (ASAP)

  15. EO Infrastructure CoP (Data) 1st meeting (attendance 17) Co-Chairs: CSIR (T van Zyl), SAEON (W Hugo). DEA (N. Fourie) Meet Data group from DAFF - pending Meet others (NGI – NSIF, SAWS, ARC) Guide SAEOSS portal development & Implementation. Recommendations to be implemented

  16. Other CoPs • Coastal & Marine – Stewart Bernard • Legal – AdvSekhula & AdvMakapela

  17. NEOSS impacts SA society • Discovery & Access to EO data through SAEOSS portal • Mobilises the EO community to use EO for informed decision-making • Through CoP’s in SBA • Networks the EO community internationally (through GEO) for knowledge exchange

  18. SUMMARY 15 CoP’s Proposed at this stage 8 Active or very nearly active (– C&M, Legal) CoP’s are basis of SA-GEO therefore PRIORITY Continual communications will lead to further involvement.
