Home Websites Digital Store FAQ Funding Contact Us Blog Ahumka Digital Create Something Great Why Social Media First Is Not A Great Online Strategy Patrick Acheampong • Apr 08, 2021 Here's what to do instead If you've found yourself thinking, “why do I need a website when I can just use social media to promote my business?” It’s a great question that we intend to answer for you in this blog post – “website vs social media“, which is best for you? Why would you want to build a website that has numerous costs (domains, hosting, designers, SEO, updates, maintenance, and more), when you could just setup social media pages for your business on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram … for FREE? As a business owner, would you rather: A) Set up shop in someone else’s store (without a lease) OR B) Own or lease a dedicated space for your business? If you setup shop solely on one or more social platforms, your business is ultimately at the mercy of those platforms. They can make changes whenever they want and you don’t have a voice, even if it impacts your business. If that platform gets acquired and changed or shut down, you may no longer be able to reach your customers. A great example of this is when many business pages were recently hurt when Facebook updated it’s algorithm, decreasing the reach of business pages. There was nothing business’s could do except complain. At the end of the day they had to accept the new rules and move forward or move on. If you have your own website, and it’s the “hub” of your business, then you have 100% control of your situation. Why social media ?rst is not a great online strategy Here’s what you need to keep in mind: Social media sites are like windmills – they are pretty and there are tons of people on there, but it’s nothing that your website can’t do. Not having a presence on social media can be a nightmare for your business because it a?ects everything – you will have more brand visibility, but it also means the more brand visibility you have, the more likely your customers are to see that you are a business they should engage with. However, it also means you need to be the one to promote your business to your followers – not Facebook, or Instagram - You. That means you need a website to engage them. Your followers are there for the most part because of your website or from an organic search, or through a referral. Social Media vs Websites Social media has the most potential to reach your customer directly, even if it’s not the ONLY way. The problem with many businesses who simply setup a Facebook or Twitter account for their business is that they’re completely reliant on the platform. If that platform has a change and you aren’t noti?ed, that’s your problem. Here’s why you would want to consider building a website: You control your own social space. Your customers can ?nd you easily, you have control over the content of your business page, you are guaranteed advertisement revenues, you have a permanent address, and you have 24/7 access to customers with a website (instead of having to contact them through a social media account). Social media is NOT built to support your business’s needs. Social media is very good for building brand awareness, but it’s not built to support your business in providing a great service or product to your customers, with whom you should have a relationship that goes beyond social media. The bene?ts of a website A website is a form of marketing for your business that is: SEO and optimization for search engines: The more your business page is ranked higher in search engine results, the more tra?c you’ll receive. SEO isn’t hard, you can make this happen. A Google Search is like a funnel with your target keyword at the top. When

Strategic placement on your website: Depending on the width of your website, you have the ability to position your content in di?erent parts of it. This will help to increase the amount of tra?c you’ll receive. Site speed: speed is important to your customers. If your site is slow, you’re going to lose customers. Ahumka Digital Home Websites Digital Store FAQ Funding Contact Us Blog The importance of a website Create Something Great Think of a website like a mini mall – it’s the front door to your business. Think about it – if you own an online store and you ?nd your store hours can’t be seen by your customers, you have a problem. You want your customers to know when to ?nd you so they can purchase what you have for sale. Can you guess the top reason why your clients look you up on the internet? The answer is: they’re looking for your store’s hours. If you ?nd yourself with a social media site, a Facebook Page or an Instagram account, then you have to rely on the creator of the platform and their whims. But when you have a website, you don’t have to deal with that. You have complete control. But, you don’t need to be your own website creator. Ahumka Digital have support products in our store that allow you to choose how much you want to do on your site and how much you want us to do. Conclusion If you have your own website, then you have 100% control of your situation. Using a store analogy, you can have your own store and still setup a rack of your items in someone else’s store. Why wouldn’t you? Especially if they o?er the space for free. Not only do you control your store, you also get to use someone else’s space to market your items and make some sales. If they close down then you might lose a great marketing space, but you aren’t out of business. This is how you should treat social media. Use social media as a marketing platform to drive tra?c to your website. Use that tra?c to grow your email and customer lists so you can communicate with them any time, any where. On your own terms. The bottom line is, it’s much smarter to invest in something you own than to build on land that doesn’t belong to you. Some day the rules are going to change, and it could have a major impact on your business, if you aren’t in control. This is why we highly recommend that you invest in your own website and then use social media – and it’s many bene?ts – to reach new audiences and grow your business. < Older Post Newer Post > Visit Our Store      Is it Wordpress or a Website?
