  1. Ch. 21-2 Farmers Dilemma • Farm Subsidies- govt. pays farmers $$ when crop prices are low • Feast- 1970’s farmers had high demand which led to high prices for their crops

  2. Famine- 1980’s farmers suffered from a decline in demand and prices • Poverty- 1980’s with high inflation and unemployment millions were living in poverty • Homeless rate skyrocketed

  3. Drug Use • Drug use became a problem during the late 1960’s • 1980’s drug use began to spread into the small towns and country side

  5. New Immigrants • 90% of immigrants now come from Asia and L. America • They need to possess a skill to be admitted • Rise of illegal immigrants from Mexico

  6. Immigration Act of 1965 • 20,000 max per country • Preference given to skilled workers and those with family ties • Rise of Nativism again in the U.S.

  7. Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 • Fined those that employed illegal immigrants • Allows those that can prove they have been here before 1982 to become citizens

  8. Changing America • Life expectancy is now greater • Social Security- taxes and cost of living adjustments have been made • Baby boomers soon retiring will impact our Social Security System
