  1. Atomic Theory History • We will scramble groups and do some research on chemists and their contribution to atomic theory • 15 minutes to research and make a visual that represents what this scientists (or group of scientists) contributed to our knowledge of the atom (You will be making presentations)

  2. Problems with some models • Quantum model (look at pic on pg 362) • Physics meets atomic structure: orbitals

  3. Basic Bohr model (rvw) • Draw, in your notes, the Bohr model of the following elements: Aluminum Nitrogen Strontium

  4. Electron configuration • Another way of describing elements • Based on ___________ • Electrons travel in ______ • Different paths of electrons • s • p • d • f

  5. http://images.inmagine.com/img/glowimages/gwp101/gwp101027.jpghttp://images.inmagine.com/img/glowimages/gwp101/gwp101027.jpg http://texas-dallas.org/images/dallas_highway_clover_leaf.jpg

  6. Orbitals • Not all circular (see pg 365) • e- like their space: think Church • e- travel in pairs, but. . . • Orbital notation: uses arrows ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ = oxygen 1s 2s 2p

  7. Time to color code periodic table

  8. Time to color code periodic table Each row is a new energy level. S orbitals

  9. P orbitals S orbitals

  10. D orbitals s orbitals p orbitals f orbitals are the 2 rows at the bottom

  11. Other electron configuration presentations • Looks like math 1s2 2s2 2p5 = Nitrogen 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s3 3p6 4s2 3d5 = Chromium [Ar] 4s2 3d5 = Chromium

  12. Practice Write the long version electron configuration for • Phosphorus • Vanadium (V) atomic # 23 • Krypton

  13. Practice #2 Write noble gas electron configuration for • Chlorine • Strontium (Sr) • Cobalt (Co)
