  1. Mapping the Mind Fumiaki Katagiri Ivelisse Lazzarini, Florence Singer Shai Shen-Orr

  2. Objectives of the Study Main stream view of perceptual studies • Goals • Map individual’s perception of a single physical object • Measure differences between individuals • Contrast individual’s differences with background.

  3. Survey • General background questions • Ranking the images of a specific concept based on three different criteria • Pricing the objects

  4. Expectations • Map each individuals’ concept basin. • Identify similar basin shapes among people. • Establish a correlation between peoples’ background and shape of basin. Chair Comfort aesthetics

  5. Clustering persons for each category 0 0 0 1 1 1 2 2 2 3 3 Aesthetics Comfort Utilities

  6. Chairs!? • That what you perceive…

  7. When combined, no distinct patterns No particular ranking behavior patterns through the categories

  8. Spearman’s Rank Correlation • Identify individual correlations • There is a relative high correlation between comfort and utility • Price correlates best with aesthetics.

  9. Conclusion and Future work! • Good methodology for mapping individual’s perception • Specific patterns exist within each concept. • Unable to detect strong interactions across the three concepts • Possible future directions • Bigger sample • Across time • Redefine questions • Develop methodology for non physical concepts

  10. Thanks • …til we meet again!! Fumi, Florence, Ivy and Shai
