  3. Famous Compositions • He wrote some of the most popular concert and theater music in the classical repertoire. Ballets: Swan Lake The Nutcracker The Sleeping Beauty Symphony: 1812 Overture Romeo & Juliet Opera: Eugene Onegin

  4. Tchaikovsky’s Life • Started piano lessons when he was 5. Within 3 years, he could play the same level as his teacher. His parent’s did not support his music for long and sent him to a Civil Servant school when he was 10. • His mother died when he was only 14. • Attended the theater and opera after school since it was not a priority of the school’s.

Tchaikovsky’s Life • Began studying music in 1861 but kept his job as a civil servant “until I am quite certain that I am destined to be a musician rather than a civil servant”. • Joined with The Five in 1867. This was a group of young composers who specialized in writing Russian influenced music.

  6. Tchaikovsky’s Life • Met a soprano and was engaged at age 28. She went and married another man and left Tchaikovsky. • Married at age 37, but was not a happy marriage. Tchaikovsky suffered an emotional crisis and never had any children. • After this crisis, his creativity increased and wrote some of his most famous works.

  7. Mrs. Von Meck • Mrs. Von Meck was a widow of a very wealthy railroad tycoon. She heard some of Tchaikovsky’s music and wanted to financially support him. • She paid him enough that he could quit working and focus on composing. • Her requirement was that they never met in person and contacted only through letters.

  8. His Death • No one really knows how Tchaikovsky died. Some people think he died of cholera from drinking contaminated water. Other experts believe that he committed suicide. • He died only nine days after the premier of his 6th Symphony. • Also, he died believing The Nutcracker was a failure because it did not gain success until 2 years later.
