  2. General information about the disaster • It was a major floodcausedby a heavy storm • The night of Saturday 31 January 1953 andmorning of 1 February • The floodsstrucknotonly in The Netherlands, but also Belgium, England and Scotland.

  3. How didit happen? • The storm was a combination of high spring tideand a severe European windstorm • The water damaged the seadefences (dykes) • The Netherlands is partly below sea-level andrelies on thosedefences

  4. Damage • The floods put large parts of South Holland, Zeeland and Noord-Brabant under water •  The heaviest death toll was recorded at the islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee • 1,835 deaths and evacuation of 70,000+ people
