  2. The Great Chicago Fire • The Chicago Fire started around 9 o’clock Sunday evening, October 8,1871. • It was believed to be started by Ms.O’Leary’s cow. • People thought the cow tipped over an oil-lamp in the barn which put the barn ablaze. The fire spread to the rest of the city.

The Great Chicago Fire • There two main contributing factors to why the blaze spread so rapidly: • Most of Chicago was built and created from wood (building trim, sidewalks, streets, lumber yards, wood piles along the river…) • There was very little rainfall that year which caused conditions to be dry. • Barely an inch-and a-half of rain fell since the Fourth of July.
