The incident is then reported to a designated person (immediately after writing it down). Agency staff, cleaners, lunch time and kitchen staff report incidents to a designated person immediately.Teachers and TAs record incidents in the book provided, students, volunteers and temporary staff report the incident to the class teacher, and or a designated person. DON’T • Make judgements, or make the child feel responsible for what has happened. • Make promises you can’t keep. • Interrogate the child with lots of questions. • Cast doubt on what the child tells. • Panic! Action taken too hastily can be counterproductive. DO: • Take the child seriously and tell them so. • Reassure the child that what has happened is not their fault…that the abuser is responsible • Be honest about your own position, who you will have to tell and why • Keep the child fully informed about what you are doing and why.
