  1. Physical and Chemical Changes !!

  2. Physical Change • Physical changes are easy to identify. If only the form of a substance changes you have observed a physical change. • An example of a physical change occurs when making a baseball bat. Even though the wood has changed shape, the chemical nature of the wood has not been changed.

  3. The bat and the original piece of wood are still the same chemical substance.

  4. Chemical ChangeDuring a chemical change, substances are changed into different substances. In other words the composition (what the object is made of) changes.

  5. Signs that tell that a chemical change has taken place: 1. Drastic color Change

  6. 2. Gas or bubbles are formed.

  7. Another example of gas/bubbles.

  8. 3. Different odor

  9. 4. Light and/or sound is given off.

  10. 5. Temperature changesExothermic –heat going out – warmerEndothermic – heat coming in - cooler

  11. 6. A solid called a precipitate is formed.

  12. Use what you have learned!! • Look at the following pictures and: • Write C if you think the picture is a chemical change. • Write P if you think the picture is a physical change.
