  1. Genetics in Brief Behavior genetics: The study of the relative effects of genes and environment on our behavior. This is know as the nature – nurture issue. Nature = Genes Nurture = Environment

  2. Environmental factors are infinite. A few examples are… • Being exposed to viruses or drugs in the womb, or not be exposed to ill effects • Growing up in a household with smokers or nonsmokers • Being raised bilingually or monolingually • Deciding to live in an urban, suburban, or rural location

  3. Our biological blueprint influences our behaviors in many ways. Gene Nucleus 46 chromosomes 23 from mother 23 from father DNA Cell

  4. Genes are distinguished by a four-letter code (A,T,G,C) Humans have about 25,000 genes. 99.0 % of your four-letter DNA sequence match that of every other human. Genetically, we’re all 99.0% identical! Because we all have so much in common, it’s not surprising that people around the world exhibit similar behaviors.

  5. So how are we different? We do have differences in our DNA, known as mutations. Mutation: Random error in gene replication that lead to a change in an individuals genetic code. Some mutations lead to good qualities, such as superior eyesight or athleticism. Others can leave us predisposed to things like cancer. We pass down our genes to future generations. However, being predisposed does not guarantee that we will develop the illness, it just means there is the possibility. The possibility of reality depends on our environment!

  6. Twin Studies(on heritability) 1. Collect and compare data on the intelligence levels of identical twins raised in the same home

  7. Twin Studies(on heritability) 2. Collect and compare data on the intelligence levels of fraternal twins raised in the same home

  8. Twin Studies(on heritability) 3. Compare the similarity in intelligence levels of the identical twins with the similarity in intelligence levels of the fraternal twins

  9. Twin Studies(example) Nature or Nurture? Two identical twin boys separated at birth were reunited in their thirties and both could be considered “neat freaks”. The first twin credited his mother and that he learned to appreciate cleanliness and proper placement from a well-kept home. The second twin also credited his mother, “ who was a complete slob”.

  10. Nature Vs. Nurture What do you think?
