Brief History of Apartheid in South Africa • 1652-Apartheid system created by Dutch Boers (or Afrikaners) • 1795-British seized the Dutch colony • 1948-Stopped British control when Afrikaner-dominated Nationalist Party won election • 1950s-Segregation laws passed through the decade • 1961-International pressure against the South African government begins and South Africa is excluded from the Olympic Games • 1964-Nelson Mandela of the African National Congress (anti-apartheid) jailed • 1970s-80s-Student protests, then world boycotts of goods begin • 1991-Apartheid repealed by white dominated government and Mandela released • 1994-Mandela elected as 1st South African black president
