  1. Assessment and Evaluation Using Technology Jennifer Thompson EDU 697 Dr. Dennis Lawrence July 7, 2014

  2. The original power point of Sharing “Small Wins” was a presentation on how my work organization uses its best practices to lead by including concrete evidence and sharing a “small win” to their client partnership of families on the companies website.

  3. Sharing “Small Wins”

  4. Description of strategy • Bright Horizons Evanston’s mission is to provide innovative programs that help children, families, and employer’s work together to be their very best. As well as being committed to providing the highest quality childcare, early education, and work life solutions in the world.

  5. Continued description of strategy • Our strategy is to keep our program successful by changing our assessment plan to a simple comprehensive online assessment program through the use of simple JIT training learning system. Training and development can provide the staff with the support and tools needed to interact affectionately with children and run the class as a whole successfully.

  6. Continued description of strategy • Bright Horizons at Evanston’s Education Coordinator for the center developed a recent survey and presented to the staff to find out which form of technology resources would be the most beneficial to training staff on how to facilitate effective assessments and evaluation. The choices were viewing a video online learning module, audio cassette and a CD-Rom. • Video viewing is a strategy that provides modeling as well as effective feedback is a great way for teachers to view classrooms in action, hear, see new research, and innovative process use in their own classrooms and schools (Gregory, Chapman 2008 p. 14).

  7. Audio cassette- According to Lever-Duffy & McDonald (2011), “An economical, durable, and easy-to-use magnetic tape medium that lets you record, and re-record, voice, music, or other sounds” (p.391). • CD-Rom- According to Lever-Duffy & McDonald (2011), “An optical storage device on which data are stored and read via optical technology” (392).

  8. The results were video online learning modules. The more practice modules are given to the teachers in training. The better chances that those teachers can provide a great learning experience for children and develop great partnerships with their parents. A great partnership can lead to referrals, which produces more money for the company.

  9. For Example • The Education Coordinators job is to train teachers by providing them with the necessary support and strategies needed to develop web-based age appropriate learning activities, evaluate and monitor children. Bright Horizons utilizes technology to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings through the use of an online portfolio system Teaching Strategies Gold. Teaching Strategies Gold is an online portfolio system where teachers can create lesson plans, assess and document each child’s milestones.

  10. Teaching Strategies Gold is an ongoing, observation-based system, which mean that you will continually be observing what children do and say each and every day (Teaching Strategies Inc., 2002-2014). Each part of the cycle requires teachers to start a different task by observing, collecting facts through observation and documentation. Also, analyze and respond to children by considering their skills in relation to specific objectives. Evaluate by comparing a child’s skills and behaviors to research-based indicators of learning and development.

  11. Once the learning activity is completed, the teacher will input assessment findings inside Teaching Strategies Gold. Teachers will be able to analyze each child’s expectation report by answering a series of questions. The report will exemplify if children are below, meeting or exceeding skills related to specific objectives and dimensions. Lastly summarize, plan, and communicate, making use of the collected information to plan experiences and share with others (Teaching Strategies Inc., 2002-2014).

  12. Explanation of “small win” • Bright Horizons Evanston will greet the New Year with a new look! We have promoted 6 teachers to new positions within the center to help with the success of the new assessment program. We have 2 teachers that have been promoted to our enrichment programs. Miss Ashton (young preschool 4) has been promoted to the Art Teacher. Miss Hannah (preschool 2) has been promoted to work with Miss Chika as a Spanish teacher.

  13. ContinuedExplanation of “small win” • We have 4 teachers that have been promoted to leadership positions. Ms. Jennifer (center support) will be our educational coordinator for infants and toddlers. Miss Michelle (infant 1) has been promoted to lead teacher position for all the infant classrooms. Mrs. Jaclyn (preschool 6) has been promoted to the lead teacher position for all the preschool classrooms and Mrs. Julie (preschool 3) has been promoted to lead teacher over all the young preschool classes.

  14. Shared value for all stakeholders • Our early education and child care programs feature: • Fully customizable centers tailored to each client’s needs • On-site, near-site, or consortium arrangements • High-quality, safe centers with Bright Horizons’ own active-learning curriculum • Environmentally sound practices that support green initiatives • Good-health programs that enhance anti-obesity efforts while instilling healthy habits from early childhood. • The ability to create new programs or assume management of existing employer-sponsored child care programs • - See more at: http://solutionsatwork.brighthorizons.com/Child-Care-and-Preschool#sthash.csYBGNeO.dpuf

  15. Relevant data and results Today's parents share high expectations for early achievement. In fact, 89% of parents surveyed that academic preparedness as the most important factor in their child's preschool experience. They want to ensure that their children enter school ready to meet or exceed academic expectations and with a demonstrable ability to apply their newly developing skills in reading, writing and math. Those same Parents overwhelmingly believe that their child's Bright Horizons experience met their high expectations: (http://www.brighthorizons.com/resources/pdf/school_readiness_study.pdf).

  16. Relevant data and results 99% of Bright Horizons parents believe that all of Bright Horizon graduates enter elementary school with a strong enthusiasm for learning. 97% of Bright Horizons parents agree that their children entered school prepared and ready to meet the demands of kindergarten or first. More than 90% believe their child entered elementary school with the necessary writing and mathskills (http://www.brighthorizons.com/resources/pdf/school_readiness_study.pdf).

  17. Win will be publicized and to whom? • This win will be publicized to all the family client partnership in Bright Horizons Evanston’s Friday Flash as well as placed on the center’s website to view. To view the center’s website go to: http://child-care-preschool.brighthorizons.com/IL/Evanston/evanston

  18. Next steps for making continuous progress • The next step for making continuous progress would be to identify the new leadership teams new roles and what their specific responsibilities will be in an effort to implement the new assessment program into each age group.

  19. How does this presentation aligns with best –practices for leading organization? • This presentation aligns with the best practices for leading an organization by including tangible and observable evidence such as by placing notification of “small win” on the companies website and including it in the teacher-parent Flash Friday. According to Spiro (2011), An early win must be obvious to see; a real result that can be put on paper or made “real” in ways that everyone can observe (Spiro, 2011, p.92).

  20. Design and implementation changes • At the beginning of this presentation, I added a summary on what the original power point presentation was about. I went more into more detail about which form of technology resources would be beneficial to teacher training on how to facilitate effective assessments and evaluation as well as explained the function of each technology resource. This part of the presentations redesigned relates to the Constructivism/Interpretivism basic principles. According to Dabbagh (2006), “Knowledge is embedded in the context in which it is used (authentic tasks in meaningful, realistic settings)” (Dabbagh, 2006). Another thing to add, it relates to the Program Learning Outcomes six “Evaluate technology resources to facilitate effective assessment and evaluation.” By having staff evaluate technology resources through a survey to determine which training method would give learners insights on real life classrooms situations through a simple framework of JIT trainings.

  21. Design and implementation changes continue • Next, implementing the use of Teaching Strategies Gold. Also, how Bright Horizons utilizes technology to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings through the use of the online portfolio system Teaching Strategies Gold. This section of the presentation connects with the Program Learning Outcomes seven “Utilize technology to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings. As well as the Cognitivism /Pragmatism goals of instruction, according to Dabbagh (2006), “Instruction is to create learning or change by encouraging the learner to use appropriate learning strategies” (Dabbagh, 2006). For example, each part of the assessment cycle requires teachers to start with a different strategy by observing, collecting facts through observation and documentation.

  22. Challenges • Lastly an implementation challenge experienced during the redesign of this process was just investigating additional simple training technology strategies to include in JIT training learning systems part of the presentation. The goal was to insure that the added strategies would be a realistic use of technology that teachers use in trainings.
