  1. GBK Geometry Jordan Johnson

  2. Today’s plan • Greeting • Warm-up • Lesson: Symmetry • Homework / Questions • Clean-up

  3. Warm-up • Define congruence in terms of transformations. • Draw a polygon. • Translate the polygon by reflection (by folding). • (Show the image, and the image of the image.)

  4. Glide Reflections

  5. Definition • A glide reflection is the composite of a translation and a reflection in a line parallel to the direction of the translation. • In other words: Reflect, then translate, or vice versa.

  6. (Reflection) symmetry

  7. Rotational Symmetries

  8. Translational Symmetry: Music Other neat examples: autologlyphsand ambigrams.

  9. Translational Symmetry:Saturated Fats…

  10. …that form blocks…

  11. …like Lard.

  12. Unsaturated Fats

  13. Summary • Each isometry has an associated symmetry: • Reflection symmetry with respect to a line: • Figure coincides with its reflection image through the line • Rotation symmetry: • Figure coincides with its image when rotated less than 360° • n-fold symmetry, if the smallest such rotation is 360°⁄n • Translation symmetry: • Figure coincides with its translation image

  14. Homework • Asg #36: From Chapter 8, Lesson 3 (pp. 314-318): • Set I Exercises 1-13. • Set II Exercises 26-40. • Bonus: Set III. • Due Wednesday, 12/12. • Asg #37: From Chapter 8, Lesson 4 (pp. 321-324): • Set I Exercises 1-11 • Set II Exercises 29-51 • Bonus: Set III. • Due Thursday, 12/13 (periods 1 & 2)or Friday, 12/14 (period 7). • Journal #12 – due Thursday/Friday. • Test Corrections – due Monday, 12/17.

  15. Clean-up / Reminders • Pick up all trash / items. • Push in chairs (at front and back tables). • See you tomorrow!
