the baltic sea

The Baltic Sea

  • Ecosystem under great stress from harmful and unsustainable human activities and practices. The Baltic is one of the most polluted regional seas worldwide due to euthrophication. Economy very mixed (tourism, shipping, transportation, energy sources, fishing). Effects of climate change.
  • Problematic continues to trigger variety of strategies, programs and projects under the umbrella of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (2007).

Regional Adaptation Strategies for the German Baltic Sea Coast (RADOST)

  • The Baltic coastline of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein is one of seven model regions in Germany that are supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through the funding activity KLIMZUG ("Managing climate change in the regions for the future").
  • Duration July 2009 to June 2014
  • Funding 9 Million Euro

RADOST

  • Essential idea of the project: To establish a close linkage between research and practice
  • Core consortium of 17 partners that receive direct funding from German Ministry of Education & Research
  • In addition RADOST involves a multitude of network partners (research organizations, business, public authorities and non-governmental organizations).
  • At the time of proposal submission, this network included around 60 partners. (Currently 100 partners).

implementation projects
Implementation Projects

Implementation projects with local partners will illustrate the economic opportunities of innovative adaptation responses. The envisaged practical applications include

- Combining coastal protection constructions with diving tourism activities

- Geothermal energy generation

- Concepts for the aquaculture industry

- New marketing strategies for beach tourism

investigating stakeholders perceptions of climate change and adaptation
Investigating stakeholders’ perceptions of climate change and adaptation

A survey of decision-makers (2011) in the regional administration will explore

perceptions of the level of satisfaction with the interaction between science and policy related to adaptation to climate change;

the perceptions of environmental threats associated with climate change;

the perceptions of adaptation measures.

It is hoped to bridge existing gaps of communication between science and

coastal stakeholders/ administration and the public, by identifying the

differences between the knowledge needs of policy makers and the knowledge

provided by science.

Focus Points in the Baltic Sea:

Hydrodynamics (alterations in waterlevels, currents) and sediment transport

Water Quality

Ecosystems and biodiversity (analysis of the past 15 years)

RADOST uses combination of existing models to illustrate changes in more detail than before and investigates on regional scales. Coastal political and economical stakeholder are involved.
