  1. MCP Biology 2011 Blood types

  2. Do Now, use your HW • If you had Type B blood what blood types could you donate blood to? • If a Type B person had a child with a Type A person, what can you predict about their children’s blood type. • Predict the possible blood types for the children of a pure German and Saami person. EXPLAIN how you came to this prediction.

  3. Task • Due: Pedigrees worksheet • Due Friday: Genetic: Punnett Squares and incomplete vs Codominance • Brief Video • Paternity Test and Blood types • Distinguish between complete dominance, incomplete dominance and codominance • Define: Incomplete dominance, codominant allele, multiple allele, autosome, sex chromosome, sex-linked trait, polygenic inheritance

  4. Distinguish between complete dominance, incomplete dominance and codominance • Define: Incomplete dominance, codominant allele, multiple allele, autosome, sex chromosome, sex-linked trait, polygenic inheritance • http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/addiction/genetics/pi.html

  5. Blood Type Alleles • There are THREE alleles for blood type: • IA • IB • i • IA and IB are both dominant • iis recessive

  6. Confused? Make a Key • There are SIX possible genotypes for blood cells. • This leads to FOUR different phenotypes

  7. Some other facts • Blood type is also labeled with a + or -. • If you ever get shot or injured you can only receive a blood transfusion from certain blood types! • Blood type can solve baby daddy drama by determining paternity • It can help determine the identity of someone who committed a crime

  8. What is different between them? • The blood types refer to different versions of carbohydrate molecules found on the surface of red blood cells. • Type O has neither Type A or Type B molecules on the surface of its RBC

  9. Why does it matter? So? • If you receive blood from someone who is not compatible your body will destroy their red blood cells.

  10. Punnetts return! Show your work • If Spongebob is homozygous Type A and Sandy is heterozygous Type B • What is the % chance that their child will have Type AB blood? • Could any offspring ever give blood to someone who is Type O? IB i IA IAIB IAi IA IAIB IAi

  11. Jerry! Jerry! Jerry! Or Maury! • Sandy isn’t sure if Spongebob or Patrick is the father • She decided to take both of them to the Jerry Springer show to take a paternity test • You have the blood type of all the adults. Prove who needs to pay for child support if the Baby’s blood type is O

  12. First make a list of all genotypes • Spongebob is homozygous Type A • Sandy is heteroygous for Type B • Patrick is heterozygous Type A. • The baby is homozygous recessive.

  13. Cross and the father is… • Patrick x Sandy • Sponge x Sandy
