  1. Linking UML Resources to Google Scholar (and Beyond!) April 21st, 2006 UML Reference Forum

  2. Linking to UML Resources • A&I Databases Fulltext • Google Scholar Fulltext Information • BISON Fulltext • BISON WorldCAT • WorldCAT OpenWorldCat • Google Scholar OpenWorldCat • Google Scholar MSpace • MSpace BISON Link to Loads Links to Loaded to Loaded to Links to Crawls Loaded to

  3. UMLinks • Works by matching information from the A&I database where the “UMLinks” button is found to UML’s holdings and services • The database (CINAHL for example) generates an OpenURL from the information in the citation

  4. Source

  5. OpenURL example • http://p9003-sfx2.exlibrisgroup.com.proxy1.lib.umanitoba.ca/umanitoba?sid=SP:NU&id=pmid:12612275&id=&issn=0031-4005&isbn=&volume=111&issue=3&spage=e221&pages=e221-6&date=2003&title=Pediatrics%20%28PEDIATRICS%29&atitle=Maternal%20gestational%20diabetes%2c%20birth%20weight%2c%20and%20adolescent%20obesity&aulast=Gillman%2c%20MW&pid=%3Cauthor%3EGillman%20MW%3bRifas%20Shiman%20S%3bBerkey%20CS%3bField%20AE%3bColditz%20GA%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E2005064354%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3Ejournal%20article%3bresearch%3btables%20charts%3C%2FDT%3E

  6. UMLinks • The OpenURL is metadata formulated in an URL to let UMLinks know what the library user is trying to access • UMLinks runs this metadata against the UML KnowledgeBase (the database where holdings information about our eresources is stored) to determine whether we have the requested item, resulting in a Services menu

  7. Services Menu

  8. UMLinks to Google Scholar • The user can then either click on a link, and be taken to the full-text

  9. Service Menu (no electronic fulltext) • Or, if there is no fulltext, be taken to a list of services that will help them find their article in another format

  10. Benefits of UMLinks for UML • ER doesn’t have to attempt to let each A&I database know what full-text we have available (only the UMLinks KnowledgeBase) • ER only has to update the information on fulltext that is unique to us (i.e. single title purchases, etc.) • The knowledgebase is automatically updated on a monthly basis

  11. UMLinks and Google Scholar • Google Scholar doesn’t formulate an OpenURL to send to UMLinks to match against our KnowledgeBase • we need to extract our holdings and send them to Google Scholar (this has been automated so that they are sent at 2:00 a.m. on Monday nights) • Task Force on Google Scholar recommended we do this since our patrons had this information in the beta version

  12. BISON to OCLC 1,458,467 records were sent to OCLC in June 2005 Currently, 262,277 of those records are not in WorldCat (and we are working on this) Every month, records added to BISON during that month are sent to OCLC Deletions are sent to OCLC on a regular basis (once per month right now)

  13. WorldCat to Open WorldCat • BISON records are available in WorldCat and in Open WorldCat • Open WorldCat makes WorldCat records available on many Web pages including: • Google Scholar, Google & Google Books • Amazon.com • Abebooks.com • Yahoo! Search… and more

  14. Open WorldCat to Google Scholar • Google Scholar connects to Open WorldCat when you click on the “Library Search” link in the results list

  15. MSpace to BISON • MARC records for electronic theses and dissertations are automatically generated from metadata entered in MSpace • These records are manually loaded to BISON; we hope to automate the procedure in the future • These records are also sent to OCLC monthly

  16. MSpace to Google Scholar • Google Scholar crawls MSpace the same way Google does other sites

  17. Google Scholar Allows: • Access to UML’s print collection through OpenWorldCat • Access to UML’s digital repository through MSpace harvesting • Access to UML’s fulltext collection through UMLinks automatic holdings extraction

  18. And beyond Google Scholar…
