  1. Composition in Photography Dewi PadmoKristanti PuspitasariSri Wahyuni

  2. Bayu, an Indonesian student in Tallahassee, just bought a new digital camera. He loves to photograph anything. Because of his hobby, he is appointed to prepare pictures for a new website and monthly electronic journal for Indonesian Students Association in Tallahassee. As much as he is excited with this assignment, Bayu is still not satisfied with the quality of the pictures he had taken. He wants to capture all of the activities perfectly with his camera. He really wants to know how to make a good picture that he could be proud of. Bayu wants to take a photography course, but he has time conflicts with his study schedule. He talked with us about that and we agreed to help him, since we know enough

  3. ? You probably have the same problem with Bayu and want to learn how to take good pictures. You see, having a good camera is not enough to make a good picture. We showed Bayu a good pictures and we discussed how to produce these kind of pictures.

  4. To make a good picture, you have to learn about several concepts, such as rule of third, simplicity, form, balance, color, and framing to make interesting images. After you learn all about that, you could learn about how to use different lighting to give an impressive effect on your pictures. However you have to decide your point on interest first.

  5. Point of interest • To spot good subjects to photograph, you must take a fresh look at things around you. You will see a lot of interesting subjects or points of interest that will look good on pictures. • Point of interest or focal point in photography is a subject that we feel will be very attractive to be photographed. In this case, before we take a picture, we have to imagine whether or not that image catch other people’s attention.

  6. Point of interest • Even though this picture is nice, but can you tell what actually the point interest is. This is a perfect example of bad choice of point of interest. In this picture, you cannot tell which one is the point of interest, the building or persons.

  7. Now, let’s move on

  8. Composition To make a picture with the right composition, you have to learn about several concepts. • Rule of thirds • Simplicity • Framing • Lighting

  9. Rule of thirds The first concept you should know is rule of thirds. Basically it is where you should place your subject in the camera frame. Usually, we put the subject in the center of the frame. But, don’t think that your main subject always has to be in the center – this can produce a dull picture.

  10. Rule of thirds Imagine your picture area divided into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. The imaginary circles suggest four options for placing your subject to make good composition. The option you select depends upon the subject and how you would like that subject to be presented.

  11. Rule of thirds • Picture 1 • Picture 2 : • Picture 3 : Take a look at some pictures that Bayu has taken. What do you think about each of the pictures in term of applying this rule of thirds? Write down your opinion and after that you can click it to have some feedback.

  12. An Example rule of third What do you think? Enter Here's a case where you have excellent subject control. You can have the model pose in a good direction. The rule of thirds indicates this placement which also gives the model a definite path to follow within the picture area.

  13. An Example rule of third What do you think? Enter You should always consider the path of moving subjects and, generally, leave space in front of them into which they can move. If you don't, here's what can happen! This child looks like she's going to run right out of the picture.

  14. An Example rule of third What do you think? Enter Here's another action shot where it's important to leave more space in front of a moving subject than behind it.

  15. Rule of thirds Just to test your understanding about the rule of thirds, here you can find some pictures that were taken by Bayu, please pick three out of pictures that you think applied a rule of thirds, just by clicking the pictures. If you got it right you will be given applause. Are you ready? Let’s do it

  16. Which pictures that applying the rule of thirds? This one This one This one This one This one

  17. Sorry you are not get it right. Find out find? Enter The position of the subject is a bit dull and seems so static because the subject is sort of in the middle of the picture

  18. Sorry you are not get it right. Find out why? Enter The position of subject is in the middle of the frame. Is to centered. Remember the rule of third don’t have to put subject in the center. It’s a bit static.

  19. Yeah..you win The camera Find out Why? Enter Yes…this picture is the most perfect picture in applying the rule of third.
