9. The End of Death. Mark 5:21-43 p. 927. We are Just Human Beings. Today: Two simple, beautiful stories Show the character and power and love of God It is OK to be human. Struggling & suffering are OK ,because God is dealing with them. It is our sin that brought tragedy to our world.

  2. We are Just Human Beings • Today: Two simple, beautiful stories • Show the character and power and love of God • It is OK to be human. • Struggling & suffering are OK ,because God is dealing with them. • It is our sin that brought tragedy to our world.

  3. We are Just Human Beings ... • God is implementing a God-sized restoration plan. • Taste it in the two stories today: ABOUT: • Coming to God • Receiving God’s touch • Believing in Him

  4. 1. Coming to God • Two very different people: President of the Synagogue – JAIRUS • Easily recognizable as a man of importance. • He came to Jesus and “fell at his feet” (v 22) • He “pleads earnestly” (v 23) • Jesus “went with him” (v 24) • The crowd is jostling him on every side ...

  5. 1. Coming to God ... A Desperate Woman: • Suffered from bleeding; bankrupted by treatments • She was unclean (Lev 15:25-27) • Making everyone in the crowd unclean. • Cannot come to Jesus directly • Thinks: “If I touch his clothes I will be healed” (v 28)

  6. 1. Coming to God ... • COMING ... • A critical first step for every human being • We need God to touch us

  7. 2. Receiving God’s Touch Jairus: “please ... Put your hands on her” (v 23) • At the house: “Jesus took her by the hand ...” (v 41) Woman: “If I just touch his clothes ...” (v 28) • Jesus turns: “who touched my clothes?” (v 30) • Woman comes “trembling with fear” (v 33) • Jesus says: “daughter ... your faith has healed you” (v 34) • Affirmation: “go in Shalom” (v 34)

Receiving God’s Touch ... • The importance of touch: • Special case – not for Centurion’s servant (Matt 8:5-13) • Usually touch is part of the healing & commissioning: • Elders pray over and anoint with oil (James 5:14) • Apostles prayed and laid hands on them (Acts 6:6) • God usually works through human touch: • There is humility in having others lay hands and pray • Power is from God; Hands are often his channel.

  9. 3. Believing in Him • Jesus encourages and commends faith • What? • What did Jairus believe? • What was the woman’s faith? • It was not: confidence in the result • It was: Coming to Jesus • Believing in the source, not the result.

  10. 3. Believing in Him ... • What about when we don’t get what we want? • His ways are beyond our understanding (Isa 55:8-9) • His will is good (Rom 12:2) • Faith: • Coming to God, seeking his touch, accepting his will ...

  11. Go in Peace • Jesus sends the woman off “in peace” (v 34) • “Shalom” – wellbeing, everything as it should be, ... • The story of Jesus confirms our hopes • No alternative to the pattern: • Come to God • Receive his Touch • Believe in Him
