  3. Doppler Effect Listen to a car (or a train) that is blowing its horn coming toward you and then going away… What changes in the way the car’s horn sounds as it comes and then goes? Not only does the car’s horn get louder when it gets close to you, the pitch actually sounds higher when it is coming toward you (it sounds like a higher note) and lower when it is going away. However, if the car was at some distance from you but stationary, it would sound like exactly the same note (only softer or louder).

  4. McGurk Effect Watch the video a couple of times. What is the man saying? Watch with your eyes closed. Now what is the man saying?

  5. Heat Conductivity Hold a piece of paper (or cotton) in one hand Hold a piece of metal (e.g. aluminum) in the other Which feels colder? How much colder (much colder or almost the same)? What temperature actually were the objects?

  6. Eye Movements Find a partner who will watch your eyes and tell you how they are moving. Now hold up a pencil and VERY SLOWLY follow the pencil tip with your eyes as you move the tip of the pencil from left to right in front of you. Now, try to make the exact same movement with your eyes (very slowly and smoothly moving from left to right) without following something Your eyes can only make jumpy movements unless they are following something!

  7. Motor Control Oddities (1) Make a counter-clockwise motion with your right foot. Stop. (2) Make a clockwise motion with your hand on the same side. Stop. Now try to do the action in (1) and then start doing the other (2) at the same time.

  8. More Motor Control Oddities Stand holding hands with the person to your side Move apart so that your arms are outstretched (still holding hands and with the person still to your side) Now, instead of holding hands, have your palms touching and push against the other person’s hand for 30 seconds (your arms will start to feel tired) Now hold let your arm go limp to your sides; what happens?
