  2. 4.1. Change in circumstances • Your circumstances may change a lot after gr12. • How? • This is part of growing up and you are about to become independent • Some people like change and adapt, they see change as an opportunity for growth • Some people fear change, they oppose it or panic

  3. How to adapt to growth and change in circumstance • Plan what to do • Use some of the skills that worked in the past when you coped with changes • Talk to somebody you trust • List the good aspects of change • Develop a positive attitude towards change and take charge • Avoid resisting change, face it and share your fears with someone you can talk to • The more information you will have about the new situation, the easier it will be to cope • Give yourself time to adjust • Use your religion or belief system to guide you and give you comfort and support

  4. 4.2. Transition between school and post-school destination • Transition = movement, passage, or change from one stage to another • See pg 27, Table 1.3.

Positive and negative aspects of change • Change is normal and happens all the time • Change can be everyday/smaller changes or it can be big • Change can be positive or negative • It can make you feel stressed because you have to face new challenges • However, with change comes opportunity

Positive and negative aspect of change • Exciting • Challenging • Motivating • Can lead to better things • Demands that you are flexible • Keeps your brain alert • Allows you to discover hidden potential • Keeps life interesting • Opportunities • Can lead to personal growth • Can cause stress • Not always for the better • May make you feel unsure and insecure • Can be irritating • Loss • Fear of the unknown • Threatening • Painful, e.g. illness • Sorrowful, e.g. death POSITIVE NEGATIVE

  7. 4.4 Investigate other views and insights of the life cycle related to traditional practices • Life cycles = growth or progression through different stages of development • Rites of passage = rituals, ceremonies, or events that symbolise important stages in a person’s life

Traditional practices: * stages of development may be marked by rituals * it will depend on what traditional practice your culture follows * rites of passage/rituals is a way for cultures to teach values and ways of living * rites of passage make it easier to move from one phase to the next and helps people adapt to change * see pg 31 for the stages in a life cycle * see pg 32-33 for examples of traditional practices
