  1. Section 9.1 Properties

  2. Properties • Additive identity property – the sum of any real number and zero is equal to the given real number • Multiplicative identity property – the product of any real number and one is equal to the given real number • Inverse (reciprocal) – numbers that combine with other numbers and result in identity elements • Multiplicative inverse property – the product of a number and its multiplicative inverse (or reciprocal) always equals one • Zero has no multiplicative inverse • Multiplicative property of zero – the product of any real number and zero is zero • Distributive property – to multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend of the sum by the number outside the parentheses • Commutative property – the order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product • Associative property – the way in which numbers are grouped when added or multiplied does not change the sum or product • Additive identity – the sum of any number and 0 is the number • Multiplicative identity – the product of any number and 1 is the number

  3. Examples • Additive identity – 5 + 0 = 5 • Key concept: + 0 • Multiplicative identity – 5 x 1 = 5 • Key concept: x 1 • Inverse of 2 is ½, the inverse of ¾ is 4/3 • Multiplicative inverse property – 2 x ½ = 1 • Key concept: result always = 1 • Multiplicative property of zero – 3 x 0 = 0 • Key concept: x 0 = 0 • Distributive property – 2(7 + 4) = 2x7 + 2x4 • Commutative property – 3 + 4 = 4 + 3, 4 x 6 = 6 x 4 • Associative property – (4+5) + 6 = 4 + (5 + 6) • (2x3) x 4 = 2 x (3x4) • Additive Identity – 5 + 0 = 5 • Multiplicative Identity – 5 x 1 = 5

  4. Find 2( 7 + 8) mentally using the Distributive Property

  5. THEME PARKS Suppose admission to a theme park costs $35 per person and meals cost $20 per
person. What is the cost for a family of 5 people?

  6. Identify the property shown by the equation Identify the property shown by the equation

  7. Identify the property shown by the equation Identify the property shown by the equation

  8. Example 5 • Identify the following properties • 6 + 0 = 6 • 7 x 1 = 7 • 3 x 1/3 = 1 • 9 x 0 = 0 • 5/6 x 6/5 = 1 • 8/9 x 1 = 8/9
