  3. What do all living things have in common? • Cells are the basic units of structure and function of all life. • Unicellular - one cell • Multicellular – many cells • All LIVING THINGS are made of cells

  4. What structures are found inside of cells? Organelles

  5. How can we describe the internal structures (organelles) of the cell? Controls what goes in and out of the cell • Cell membrane - • Cell Wall - • Cytoplasm - • Nucleus - • Mitochondria - • Chloroplast - • Vacuole - Gives plant cells its shape. Protects the cell Jelly-like substance found inside of cells Controls ALL cell activities “Powerhouse” of cell – makes energy Makes food during photosynthesis Stores food and waste

  6. How do Plant cells & Animal cells compare?

  7. How do materials travel into and out of a cell? • Diffusion-movement of materials into or out of a cell (HIGH to LOW concentration)

  8. Draw Diffusion in a Cell oxygen

  9. How does water move across the cell membrane? • Osmosis- the diffusion of water into our out of a cell

  10. Identify the Organelle from its function. • Controls the cells activities and contains the chromosomes • Creates energy for the cell • Helps plants make their own food • Found on the outside of plant cells, making them tough (hard) • Determines what travels into and outside of cells. Nucleus Mitochondria chloroplast cell wall cell membrane

  11. How do cells reproduce themselves? • Mitosis. • Asexual reproduction when one parent cell splits into two IDENTICAL daughter cells 4. 2. 5. 1. 3.

  12. What do cells pass on to their daughter cells during mitosis? • Chromosomes (DNA) • Body cells have 46 chromosomes

  13. Why do cells go through mitosis? • To heal your skin • To build and repair body tissue • To grow

  14. Summary Questions • How do living things differ from nonliving things? • How do plant cells differ from animal cells? • Compare the parts of a cell to our school. • Compare diffusion & osmosis. • Explain how cells produce new cells.
