  2. Early Life • George Herman Ruth Jr. was born on February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland. • His parents were George Herman and Kate Ruth. • He was the oldest of 8 children; 6 deceased before childhood. • Ruth was sent to St. Mary’s Industrial School for boys in 1902, at the age of 7.

  3. Continued • He had no visitors. • Had organized play outside for 2-3 hours a day • He only wanted to play baseball. • At the age of 8, he was playing with 12 year olds. • At the age of 12, he was playing with 16 year olds. • He was on varsity at the age of 16. • Natural born Hitter

  4. Early Baseball Career • Brother Matthias was his mentor. • Brother Gilbert contacted Jack Dunn, Orioles owner. • Jack Dunn became Ruth’s guardian. • The Boston Red Sox bought Ruth for $2,900 in 1914.

  5. Continued • Pitched and moved to outfield in 1919. • In his career with the Red Sox, he had 87 wins and 44 losses • Won three World Series- 1916 and twice in 1918 • Sold him to the Yankees for $125,000

Late Baseball Career • Named the ‘Sultan of Swat’ • Became the highest paid player of his time • In1927 Ruth and Lou Gehrig were named ‘The Greatest home-run hitting duo’ in baseball. • Ruth came up with the ‘called-shot’ home-run hit. • Yankees traded him to the Braves in 1935, but was released that June.

  7. Records • In 1927 Ruth hit sixty homeruns in one season. • Record was broken by Roger Maris, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds. • He also set a record of 714 career homeruns. • Hank Aaron(755) and Barry Bonds(762) • 457 total bases in a single season • 177 runs in a single season

  8. Post Baseball • Ruth was known for his party lifestyle and outside charities. • He was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. • Single greatest player • Founded the Babe Ruth Foundation for underprivileged children in 1947

The Great Bambino Ends • George Herman ‘Babe’ Ruth died on August 16, 1948. • He was 53 years old at the time of his death. • Went down in history as America’s Greatest Baseball Player. • The name ‘Ruth’ goes down in American history as someone who can be described as outstanding in all fields.
