  1. Audio in E-Learning How effective audio might be in the e-learning environment How the integration of audio with text enhances learning Appropriate use for technologies Technologies for audio in e-learning • Available Technologies • Podcasts • Head Phones • Screen Readers • Audio Books • Audio Description Software • Microphones • MP3 players • Web Audios • Audio Boo Example text Go ahead and replace it with your own text. This is an example text. • Implementing an audio component to the online environment: • Enables the instructor to include more detail (M. Ann Bock, n.d.) • Facilitates the inclusion of examples (M. Ann Bock, n.d.) • Permits the learners to listen to the material (M. Ann Bock, n.d.) • Recorded audio allows learners to go over material as many times as needed (M. Ann Bock, n.d.) • Audio feedback increased learner involvement and enhanced interactions (Ice, Curtis, Phillips, & Wells, 2007) • Audio increases retaining of content (Ice, Curtis, Phillips, & Wells, 2007) • Multimedia Principle: • “Retention is improved through words and pictures rather than through words alone” (Cisco, 2008). • If the text and audio are out of synch, there is still the other to fall back on. For example, if the audio has a delay, then it can be turned off and the text will still remain. If the text is fuzzy or cannot be seen, then the audio can be the primary mode of learning. • If the text is ambiguous and could be understood incorrectly, the addition of audio allows the learner to know what emotion the text should convey. Redundancy Principle: Do not add on-screen text to narrated graphics. Based on research and theory on cognitive psychology, Clark and Mayer recommended avoiding e-learning courses that contain redundant onscreen text presented at the same time as on screen graphics and narration. Learners might pay so much attention to the printed words that they pay less attention to the accompanying graphics. (Clark & Mayer, 2008) • This is an example text.
