  1. Buyers Guide to Infographic designed and brought to you by Patio Umbrellas The patio is sometimes part of the house that is the least visited during a sunny or a rainy day. Simply because it can be too hot under the scorching sun or too wet right after the least bit of rain. Though it can be very comfortable inside the house, the patio is one of the best places where everyone can sit on their favorite Adirondack chair, while enjoying conversation, fresh air or a nice meal with family and friends. Patio umbrellas serve the purpose of adding a bit more needed shade while adding to your home’s décor. Here are some things to consider when choosing the best patio umbrella for your home. SIZE - Dimensions / Area Coverage Know your available space PATIO AREA Your new patio umbrella will substantially take space on your patio. Having the wrong size umbrella will most likely make the people under it very uncomfortable. Using a tape measure, measure the area where your umbrella will be at. Add 2 feet on each edge for the best shade coverage. 2ft. Knowing your umbrella size The standard size for a patio umbrella is 8.5 feet. This size is ideal for a 4 x 4 feet table to have everyone sitting around it to receive enough shade. Although your patio may not have the same size table it is important to know how to measure an umbrella before your purchase. radius x 2 = diameter Using your tape measure, measure the distance from the tip of the rib to the bottom. Multiply by 2 and you should have your diameter. HEIGHT - Pole height Distance from floor to umbrella 8 feet is the recommended minimum for a patio umbrella height. 8 feet high poles are easily available, but you do have other options as well. Consider any obstructions such as roofing, down pipes or anything else that may be in the way of your umbrella. Also, know that the higher it is, the bigger shade it will make. 8ft. BASE - Size & Weight of the base Base Weight Your strong, heavy base will keep your umbrella in place. A lighter base than necessary will end up flipping your umbrella or even have you chasing the umbrella across your property. Here are recommended base for your umbrella size under normal wind conditions. • 20 lbs. for 6 feet diameter umbrellas • 30 lbs. for 6.5 feet diameter umbrellas • 40 lbs. for umbrellas up to 7.5 feet in size • 50 lbs. to 70+ lbs are used for heavier or larger umbrella sizes i.e. 9 feet and above Base Size & Style A base material of your patio umbrella varies from model to model. Common bases are made from plastic, some made from metal or there are even some that are made from cement. A plastic base is meant to be filled with water or sand. It can be bulky vertically and does not last as long compared to metal or cement bases. The commonly shaped ‘t’, metal bases does not carry too much weight. Some models are very large and tends to trip anyone who passes by. Cast iron ones are also available and are heavier but can be more expensive. Having the same profile as a metal base, a cement base can also be smaller and more obscure yet heavier, with the option of adding in more weight on top if needed.
