Technology @ USC • The Carolina Network / Logging In • One login (Active Directory) – appears as DS on login screen • Grants access to Servers • Course-related, personal storage, shared space & research-related • VIP – vip.sc.edu(manage USC resources) • Courses, passwords, employment info, ordering software, Carolina card • http://uts.sc.edu/getconnected.shtml • BlackBoard - blackboard.sc.edu(class related materials) • UTS offers short courses on various components of BB • Personal Computers on the USC Network • Requirements for ethernet connections • Active virus protection application (from link above) • provide machine’s MAC address to Lynette to be put on network. • Wireless networks • indoor & outdoor networks (useuscstudent or attwifi)

  3. General Information: vip.sc.edu Almost all access to computerss/printers/servers is tied to your DS (domain server) login (Network UserID). You can change this password using VIP. NOTE THAT YOUR VIP PASSWORD is a different password (and is associated with your Student Number).

  4. Things you won’t remember until you need them! • Disk Storage • storage space for course-related needs is requested by instructor • Geography has a server you canrequest space on (CoCASrSANfs) • shared, non-protected server/space called “xplat” good temporary solution • Web space • the department & University does not maintain a web server for personal or professional webspace but we are working on a solution this semester. • Printing/Scanning/Plotting charges for printing are tied to your Carolina Card account ! • add money to a Carolina Card using VIP (good at dining, bookstore, library, Starbucks too) • some printers are free for Grad students (room 330) • only Lynette can add printer connections (for most computers) • 2 scanners available (301 and 319) – see Lynn/Kevin for details for 319 • large format plotters available in Gambrell Hall ($$$) (http://artsandsciences.sc.edu/citc/printing.html) • Software/Hardware • some software (free & $$$) can be downloaded from VIP • Lynn/Kevin can distribute most Esri (GIS) software free of charge • other GIS/RS software (ERDAS/ENVI/etc.) have distribution restrictions • Lynette should answer all other software availability questions (Office, SAS,SPSS) • Lynette manages computer in labs 005, 301 and on any instructor classroom machine • machines in labs & student offices are administered by either Lynette, Kevin, Lynn or Chris Emrich (HRVI Lab)
