  1. B737 GPS/FMS Part 8: GPS Warning and Messages

  2. Topics • Warning Devices • MCDU • Annunciator Bank • HSI • Warning and Annunciations

  3. The B737 installation provides a number of devices that provide warning and annunciations to pilots when the GPS/FMS is not working properly. The CMA 900 has two sections that are the primary reference for FMS failures in conjunction with the SOP’s. These are: Section 12 - Abnormal Procedures Section 15 - System Messages and Remote Annunciations

  4. MCDU The MCDU provides warnings and alerts via a number of different methods. The annunciator bank along the top of the MCDU incorporates a number of annunciations.

  5. MCDU Annunciators POS Annunciator: illuminates when the aircraft’s navigation is in dead reckoning OFST Annunciator: illuminates during offset (parallel) track navigation FAIL MSG POS OFST IND ATC MSG Annunciator: illuminates when a caution or warning alert message appears in the scratchpad field of the MCDU display IND Annunciator: illuminates when the FMS is operating in independent mode FAIL Annunciator: illuminates at maximum with the display upon detection of a major MCDU failure ATC Annunciator: illuminates to indicate the reception of Air Traffic Control message (when implemented)

  6. MSG Annunciations are amplified with an explanation in the scratch pad The scratchpad provides a detailed explanation of the source of the annunciation A description of the scratchpad message is provided in Section 15 of the CMA-900 Operator’s Manual

  7. Scratch pad annunciations can be cleared with the CLR key Scratch pad annunciations can also be recalled by using INIT/REF then MSG RECALL <LSK 6R>

  8. The annunciator bank Located beneath the RMI’s, the annunciator bank serves a number of roles: • it acts as a repeater of MCDU annunciations (OFFSET, MSG, GPS INT) • it provides information regarding the status of flight (OFFSET, VERT, WPT, APPR CAP)

  9. The MSG on the MCDU is repeated on the Annunciator Bank Refer to the CMA-900 FMS Operator’s Manual, Section 15, for appropriate pilot actions to be accomplished in response to displayed messages on the MCDU. Some of the FMS messages describe malfunctions or degradation of GPS capability. IFR GPS operations must be discontinued upon display of such messages. MSG MCDU MESSAGE

  10. OFST The OFST on the MCDU is repeated on the Annunciator Bank indicating that the FMS is operating on a parallel offset track

  11. If a GPS INT annunciator appears with an FMS Message of “GPS POS UNCERTAIN” MSG During an IFR GPS Approach: Terminate IFR approach and either use traditional navigation aids to continue the approach or execute a missed approach, if required. GPS POS UNCERTAIN Note: in synchronized mode of operation, the GPS INT annunciator illuminates if GPS integrity is lost on all GPS sensors

  12. If a GPS INT annunciator appears with an FMS Message of “GPS POS UNCERTAIN” MSG During an IFR Enroute/Terminal: Continue to navigate using the CMA-900 FMS or revert to an alternate means of navigation appropriate to route and phase of flight. When continuing to use GPS navigation, position must be verified every 15 minutes using other IFR approved navigation systems. GPS POS UNCERTAIN Note: in synchronized mode of operation, the GPS INT annunciator illuminates if GPS integrity is lost on all GPS sensors

  13. If a GPS INT annunciator appears with an FMS Message of “GPS NAV LOST” MSG During an IFR GPS Approach: Terminate IFR approach and either use traditional navigation aids to continue the approach or execute a missed approach, if required. GPS NAV LOST Note: in synchronized mode of operation, the GPS INT annunciator illuminates if GPS integrity is lost on all GPS sensors

  14. If a GPS INT annunciator appears with an FMS Message of “GPS NAV LOST” MSG During an IFR Enroute/Terminal: Revert to an alternate means of navigation appropriate to route and phase of flight. GPS NAV LOST Note: in synchronized mode of operation, the GPS INT annunciator illuminates if GPS integrity is lost on all GPS sensors

  15. POS Dead Reckoning Mode “POS” ANNUNCIATOR ILLUMINATES ON MCDUs Refer to CMA-900 FMS Operator’s Manual Section 12 for Dead Reckoning mode operational procedures.

  16. HSI SOURCE SELECT SWITCH FAILS TO INDICATE "FMS" OR "VOR/LOC” Verify navigation source displayed on HSI. Continue operation in accordance with navigation source displayed on HSI.

  17. Loss of FMS Annunciation ALL FMS ANNUNCIATORS FAIL TO ILLUMINATE Discontinue IFR GPS operations.

  18. If the VOR/LOC flag appears on the HSI during FMS operations: Use the HSI Source Select Switch to return the navigation mode to VHF Nav V O R L O C Confirm that VHF nav data is being provided to the HSI and continue flight using the remaining operational navigation equipment appropriate for the phase of flight
