  4. Whales - Cetaceans • Flattened heads, lack of external hind limbs, paddle-like forelimbs, location of blowhole • Largest animals on earth

  5. Whales – A History • Hunted for blubber – whale oil • Fishing practices that kill whales faster than they can reproduce

  6. Baleen or Toothed? • Baleen have whalebone – sieve like teeth • Strain for food - krill • Cannot swallow large creatures – throats are too small • Two blowholes • Killed for meat, oil & baleen – 1.5 tons/whale! • Toothed have sharp teeth • Rip & tear • One blowhole

  8. Blue Whale • Largest. Animal. Ever! • Calves are 2 tons at birth. That’s 4,ooo pounds. That’s 4 grand pianos swimming at you. • Baby calf eats 200 pounds of milk. Every. Day. Until it’s seven months old. That’s 5,250 gallons. Of milk. • By 7 months, it will weigh 23 tons. And measure 52 feet long. • Can make babies by age 5 • Will live to be ~35 years old

  12. Sperm Whale • Largest of the toothed • 50 feet long • Deep water whales • Will eat up to 2000 pounds (1 ton) of food a day • Love cuttlefish, squid, octopus • Found in all oceans

  13. Family • Moms stay with babies. Even if the calf is dead! • Pods run by one or two cows. Bulls only enter during mating season • Gestation is 16 months long!
