  1. Initiation Before we start, on the table at the top, record on a scale from 1-10 (10 is strong), how do you feel about the things that will be on the test: • Vocabulary • Mitosis • Meisosis • Genetics (Punnett Squares) • Pedigrees

  2. Directions • You are reviewing for tomorrow’s test– this is more than a game, it is a review. • Meaning: take notes (if you don’t know it, look it up!), try not to look at notes while you are reviewing, ask questions • Mr. Berning has final say on scoring. • You are playing for bragging rights, scientific knowledge and the coveted Gregor Mendel certificate of DOMINATION

  3. Task One What is this process called? How many daughter cells are produced? What kinds of cells are produced (haploid or diploid)? What kinds of cells are produced (body cells or gametes)? What happens in metaphase?

  4. Task Two What is this process called? How many daughter cells are produced? What kinds of cells are produced (haploid or diploid)? What kinds of cells are produced (body cells or gametes)? What is something unique that happens in meiosis I?

  5. Task Three

  6. Task Four A bone cell of a male dog has 78 chromosomes. How many chromosomes are in the dog’s skin cells? How many chromosomes are in it’s sperm cells?

  7. Task Five Most cells of a cat contain 38 chromosomes. Some of its cells, though, are found to contain 19 chromosomes. • What kind of cells contain 19 chromosomes and by what process are they produced? • What kind of cells contain 38 chromosomes and by what process are they produced?

  8. Task Six: Rapid Fire Vocab • Alleles • Genotype • Phenotype • Homozygous • Heterozygous • Gamete

  9. Vocab • Alleles- different forms of a gene • Genotype- Genetic (Aa) characteristics of an organism • Phenotype- Physcial characteristics of an organism • Heterozygous- (hetero = different); Organisms with two unlike alleles for a trait • Homozygous- (homo= same); Organisms with two like alleles for a trait • Haploid- Cells with half the number of chromosomes • Diploid- (di = two) Cells with two sets of chromosomes • Gametes- sex cells (egg and sperm)

  10. Task Seven Achondroplasia is the most common form of dwarfism (makes up 70% of dwarfism). Achondroplasia is a dominant, meaning short stature is dominant over tall stature. 1. Using the letter A as the allele fordwarfism: 2. Cross a heterozygous individual with a homozygous recessive. (must show punnett square) 3. Genotyperatio? • Phenotype ratio?

  11. Task Eight What is the genotype of individual 1 in the 1st generation? How do you know? What is the genotype of individual 2 in the 2nd generation? How do you know?

  12. Task Nine • Was Mendel wrong? Given what we know about how blood types, height, blended characteristics, etc., was Mendel wrong? Why or why not? • Give an example of the following types of genetics: • Complete dominance: • Incomplete dominance: • Codominance: • Multiple Alleles:

  13. Termination • (go back to the table you filled out at the beginning of class) • Write down what you know how to do and what you need to study tonight: • Vocabulary • Mitosis • Meiosis • Genetics Problems • Pedigrees • Write down how you will study for this test
