  2. Objectives for Today • Students will identify the main ideas and supporting details in informational text. • Students will monitor and clarify their thinking. • Students will use the strategy “Unpack the Suitcase” when identifying Main Ideas and Details.

  3. Main Idea • A main idea is an important, or major, idea about a given topic.

  4. Supporting Details • Supporting Details are facts or examples that tells more about a main idea.

  5. Main Idea • As you read, you will use note cards and/or a Web to record details about the story’s Main Ideas and Details.

  6. Cats Big and Small(Projectable 10.2) • Cats are divided into two groups, big cats and small cats. • Small cats include house cats, but the cougar is also considered a small cat.

  7. Cats Big and Small(Projectable 10.2) • Yet cougars are larger than some big cats, such as cheetahs. • So what makes one cat “big” and another “small” if it isn’t size?

  9. Cats Big and Small(Projectable 10.2) • Most big cats can roar, but can’t purr. Small cats can purr, but they can’t roar. • This difference comes from the hyoid bone, which connects the tongue to the roof of the mouth.

  10. Cats Big and Small(Projectable 10.2) • In a big cat, this bone is flexible and lifts up. • In a small cat, the hyoid bone is hard, so the animal can only purr.

  11. Cats Big and Small(Projectable 10.2) • Think Out Loud • The topic is big and small cats, and the main idea seems to be the differences between them. We’ll put that in the center of our Web and then find details to support it.

Cats Big and Small(Projectable 10.2) • Monitor/Clarify • Readers can clarify what they find confusing by reviewing details. • Think Aloud • It confuses me that cougars are classified as small cats even though they are large in size. When I reread the text, I find that they purr, which is the key characteristic defining a small cat.

  14. End of Day 1 • Students will read the Background, Main Ideas and Details, and the selection Cougars. (pp. 248-260) • Students will identify Main Ideas and Details regarding the following topics: • How are cougars like other cats? • What did you learn about new cougar kittens? • What did you learn about cougar development? • What are the main ideas and details important to the whole selection?

  15. Pack the Suitcase • Focus: Identifying the most important information in the text. • After you have read the selection, Cougars, write on the given cards the information that you think is important about the following topics: • How are cougars like other cats? • What did you learn about new cougar kittens? • What did you learn about cougar development? • Be sure to include the page numbers on your cards for future reference.

  16. Pack the Suitcase (continued) • Using the given envelope with a suitcase on it, and the note cards you have written about Cougars, proceed to pack your suitcase. • You are going on a trip to the Rocky Mountains to actually observe Cougars in the wild, but you have a dilemma, or problem. • You have over packed and you must lighten the load in your suitcase.

  17. Pack the Suitcase • Your assignment is to think about and decide what items to “unpack.” • You must remove half of what you have packed. • After you have done this, find a partner and unpack what is left in your suitcase. • You will be looking for similar topics, or commonalities. • Lastly, discuss what similarities existed and decide on what is in fact “important.” • Compare your finding with the following Main Idea and Detail Webs created by the text that follow.
