  1. WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION • FOREST STEWARDSHIP Using Facebook in Constituent Outreach5 Quick Tips for Success Presented by: Kevin W. Zobrist Regional Extension Specialist Washington State University Extension

  2. Key advantages of using Facebook for constituent outreach Instantly and actively push content. Expand your reach. (Let the network work for you!) Reach people where they are at. (Your absence could be conspicuous!)

  3. Tip #1: Keep it appropriate and professional. No: • Personal details • Baby pictures • Jokes • Unrelated material Yes: • Program announcements • Volunteer opportunities • New research/ publications • Current events • Relevant photos

  4. Tip #2: Keep it useful. • What is the purpose? • Why should someone read your post? **Let the content lead, not the technology** (Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should!)

  5. Tip #3: Don’t overdo it on the number of posts. Users will hide your content altogether if it becomes obtrusive. 1 – 3 times per week is plenty. Think like a user – when/why do you hide pages?

  6. Tip #4: Monitor (and respond to) feedback regularly. People like to be acknowledged.

  7. Tip #5: Include engaging content.

  8. The four horsemen of the social networking apocalypse: • Time Commitment • Record retention • Moderating • Password sharing
