Search Clinic: Chemicals & Drugs in PubMed Goal: For participants to understand how the NLM MeSH vocabulary is used to describe chemicals, drugs and other substances and their actions and therefore how to search PubMed for relevant articles. Intended Audience: Librarians with little to moderate experience in searching for articles about chemicals or drugs in PubMed. Note: We are not chemists!

Objectives: You should have an understanding of: • How chemicals, drugs and other substances are indexed in MEDLINE, and therefore how to search for them in PubMed. • How to search in PubMed using pharmacological action terms. • Some specific vocabulary issues in searching for chemicals, including how to use some relevant subheadings • How PubMed translates some common characters (parentheses, brackets, commas, hyphens) found in chemicals

  4. Subheadings Toxicity: Experimental studies that explicitly determine the ill effects of the substance. Poisoning: Life-threatening intoxication, which can be accidental, occupational, suicidal, by medication error, or by environmental exposure. Adverse effects: Side effects or complications of a substance used in an accepted dosage when intended for diagnostic, therapeutic, prophylactic, or anesthetic purposes. Note that this subheading also includes toxicity and poisoning.

Summation and review (1 of 2) • In general, use unqualified substance names for the most comprehensive results • If you must qualify, use [nm] • Check MeSH for previous indexing • Use pharmacological actions for precision • To combine with a substance term, search as [mh] • Try using subheadings to better describe your topic of interest • Ignore stereoisomerism when identifying substance names

  7. Summation and review (2 of 2) • If you can’t find a salt, try the general compound term • Search with RN only after checking MeSH • Use commas, hyphens, and prime symbols, but don’t use parentheses or square brackets in molecular names • Try searching by fragments of the chemical name in the MeSH Database • Try the PubChem Substance Database to find substances, especially if you only have the molecular name, structure or weight
