Consideration for public review

the essence
The Essence
  • An FGDC-endorsed standard that complements, not replaces, existing address standards.
  • The purpose is to facilitate the successful sharing of addresses. Sharing requires two types of information -- Content information and Format information. This standard provides a method of documenting the CONTENT of address information by
      • Providing content documentation requirements.
      • Standardizing some commonly used discrete units of address information.
      • Standardizing terms and their definitions to alleviate inconsistencies and simplify the documentation process.
      • Acknowledges the importance of mailing addresses and provides a vehicle for crosswalking an address to US Postal Service address standards.
a disclaimer
A Disclaimer *
  • The standard
    • does not require that addresses be shared and does not provide guidelines for determining if they can be shared.
    • Does not standardize Format information (that second bit of information needed to share addresses).
  • Does not apply to electronic addresses.

* (what it doesn’t do)

perceived benefits
Perceived Benefits
  • Encourages the exchange of address information.
  • Ensures that those desiring to exchange address information ‘speak a common language’ and can exchange information with a minimum of effort.
  • Complements, but does not replace, existing address standards.
  • Keeps it simple.
