Areas around lakes and waterways were cleared. In the 11th century, Sigfrid the English missionary arrived in Värend as the first Christian messenger.

  4. 1900 The population trebled in just over 50 years. At the turn of the century 7400 people lived in Växjö. In 1940, the figure was 15,600 1940 Södra Skogsägarna was established as a business. Today, this is an international forestry group 1950 – 60 Svenska Fläktfabriken and Telub were established in Växjö. New housing estates developed.   33. Fossil Fuel Free Växjö Vision We have the vision of a fossil fuel free Växjö, where our energy consumption does not lead to any climate change. The City of Växjö strives to use energy from renewable sources of energy, to use energy efficiently and to go over to a fossil fuel free transport system. The emissions of carbon dioxide from Växjö have decreased by 30 % per capita between 1993 and 2006.
