Maths in our daily life • Today in maths the teacher asked her students the following question: • Which would you prefer: • To have $100 deposited into your bank account immediately? • To have I cent deposited into your bank account immediately, and each day have this amount doubled for a period of one fortnight? • Some students tried to guess the answer and some started some calculations. 1x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2 Is there a better way to write this? = 16 384 cents ÷100 =$ 163.84 Students found that the second option was better. 214

  4. MATHS AND SCIENCE • Today in science the teacher asked her students about the speed of light . One of the students came up to the board and wrote : • 300 000 000 m/s. The teacher told her students that there is an easier way to write this number. 3x108 m/s Scientists use a method that uses a power of 10. It is called scientific notation or standard form.
