  1. Hillcrest Middle School “A.P.” Time Student Training 2013-2014

  2. A.P. (Academic Prep): What is the purpose? • Additional time and support for students to engage in various levels of enrichment and/or make-ups.

  3. When and What? • When do you have Academic Prep? • The 30 minutes each day during 4th hour classes that is not designated for direct content instruction • Mon=Hillcrest Happenings/MAP Tues=Intervention/MAP Wed=Character Lessons Thurs=Intervention/MAP Fri=SSR

Mondays -Hillcrest Happenings • Complete Planner with Campus Events using Student Weekly Bulletin (i.e. Athletics, Clubs, Library Hours, Alternate Schedules, Spirit Days, Team Activities, etc.) • We encourage you to attend events, participate in extra-curricular activities, share current events and promote school spirit. WE ARE HILLCREST!!!!

  5. Tuesdays/Thursdays – AP Time • Academic Preparation Time = AP Time • Working or reading!

  6. Wednesdays - RTI Lessons • What does RTI stand for? Response To Intervention • RTI is a program designed to build positive campus culture. • As part of RTI, every Wednesday will be dedicated to character building lessons for all students.

  7. Fridays - SSR Sustained Silent Reading • All of the 30 minutes will be spent reading. • This is not a time to do homework, just reading! • Always have a lexile-appropriate novel available. • Junior Scholastic Science magazines will be provided as part of our reading rotation. • Nooks, Kindles, and other eReaders are considered electronic devices that are expected to be off when students are on campus, as are cellphones and other such devices.

  8. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays - MAP Introducing M.A.P. Time!!! • Math Academic Preparation is a time for math teachers to provide additional interventions as needed. • Mon: 4th Lunch AP Time • Tues: 2nd Lunch AP Time • Thurs: 1st Lunch AP Time • Only math teachers will provide a blue pass for students to go to Mrs. McLain’s room.

  9. What can a student do during Academic Prep on Tuesdays and Thursdays? • Make Up a Quiz/Test • Make Up or Get Help on Assignment • Special Help • Media Center/Research • Levels of Enrichment • Reading (SSR) • MAP • Homework/Study Hall • Vocabulary Activities

  10. Release from class for non-AP Time purpose without direct teacher supervision • Using cell phone • Watching TV • Listening to IPods, MP3, etc. • Socializing • Playing Cards Students will NOT be permitted to participate in non-academic activities such as:

  11. **Tuesday passes will be YELLOW and Thursday will be GREEN MAP passes will be BLUE Student Passes • Get a pass from your teacher on Monday for Tuesday or Wednesday for Thursday Intervention Time. • It is your responsibility to get the pass from your teacher. • If you lose your pass, another one will not be issued for that day. • MAP passes must be issued from your math teacher. YOUR Responsibility

  12. How do you get an AP Intervention pass? By asking the teacher whose classroom you need to go to • How do you get a MAP pass? By asking your math teacher • Who should you see to get an Academic Prep pass to the Media Center? By asking the Media Center specialist (Miss Gloria) ONLY!

  13. If you do not have an AP Intervention pass, what should you do? • The student will remain in the classroom and work on an approved activity for Academic Prep. • What will happen to students who are outside without an Academic Prep pass? • They will receive necessary disciplinary action.

  14. What if a student has an AP Intervention pass, leaves their 4th hour class, and that student does not show up to appropriate destination? • The students will receive a ZERO on the assignment/test/quiz they were to make-up and receive disciplinary consequences • Sign-in Logs will be closely monitored by each teacher and our campus Administrative team.

  15. What if a student is NOT well behaved during Academic Prep? • The student will receive appropriate disciplinary action. • What are you NOT allowed to do during Academic Prep? • Leave class for non-AP Time purpose without direct teacher supervision • Watch television • Listen to Ipod, Mp3 player, or have phone out • Play cards • Socialize

  16. A few quick hints . . . • Students will be released with their AP Intervention passes when AP Time/MAP begins on Tuesdays & Thursdays or Mondays for MAP. • Students will stay in that room the entire period. • Be sure you sign out/sign in with your teachers on the appropriate form.
